I know it's not orange, just had a quick question for any of you guys that know about the. I have been seeing the 1550 tractors and a size above and below. The 1550 rates right at 53hp at the pto, so I would say it's close to a 170 or D-17, but man those olivers look big for that HP. Are they as big as they look?

the 1550 is the smallest of the american built olivers which are all row crop or standard tractors of that period, the smaller 1465/50 and smaller tractors are fiat import utility models the olivers where great tillage tractors the enjines set in a big cast iron tub that gave these tractors great weight to hp ratio, the base tractor is 2200 lbs heavier than the d-17, however the allis can be weighted to get into the oliver weight range, and the oliver has a 9" longer wheel base, that with the difference in the 38 versus 28 rear tires gives it a more robust look than the allis d-17 also the oliver was shipped with a six cylinder where the allis was a 4 cylinder. the hydra power was a two speed torque amplifier and subject to failure on the tractors as the system was on all the other brands of that period that went by different names such as TA, multi power, dual power, ect

I have to admit I like Oliver tractors. My Dad started farming with Oliver tractors in 1939, he bought a new Oliver 70 Row Crop, he farmed with Olivers, buying another used 70 and two 88 Olivers, then in 1955 he bought his first AC, a 1955 WD45 which I still have. We farmed mostly with AC after that. If I collected any other brand of tractors it would be Oliver.

Oliver would be second on my list of collectibles. My neighbor farms with 2 1655s and they are a damn good tractor. Plenty of power and plenty of weight to utilize that power.

Yeah I just seen a couple while I was browsing through Tractor House and they looked really big to me given the hp range. I think they are a good looking tractor as well. and I have heard some of you guys refer to the oliver as "the good green tractor" lol.

There was a 1550 that went on the Red Rock Thresher's ride. I had my D17D close to it. Physical size looked to me to be real close to a D19. The "good green tractor", most of them were made up the road a bit in Charles City Ia... The Floyd County Museum in Charles City has just about all of the Oliver production records in their archives. They can provide build dates, etc from the tractor's serial number.

We had a 770 and a 1750 running alongside our ACs. They were good machines. Dad always complained though that the 50+ hp 770 used more gas than our 60+ hp D19. Physically, I believe the 770 did stand a little taller than the D19. The 1750 and our 190XT were the biggest tractors we had and again the 80hp 1750 was at least as tall as the 115hp 190XT both on 18.4X34 rear rubber.

we have 4 on the farm along side the 5 allis'. 1550 1650 and 2 1850. yeah they are big compared to ac. oliver always seemed to use large rear tires. the 1650 looks almost as big as my 190. i thing a 1550 is taller and heavier than aa d-17/170 ours has a 6cyl wak gasser. they have some nice features, true live pto,hydro power drive, disc brakes. But they also have a crazy double H gear pattern that isn't the same model to model and the will run off downhill with the hydro power drive in low. all in all a nice machine and you can pick them up pretty reasonable. way cheaper than those "other green tractors"

My uncle has a few Oliver's and he likes them. 60,77,88's
He almost got me totally hooked on them when I was a kid, but the first tractor my father bought was a wd-45. He got it for 700 in great shape the guy thought the engine was bad had a top end noise, turns out the splash guard in the valve cover came loose. I'm an AC guy but still have a small spot for Oliver's.

I believe Dick L is not only an AC man, but owns a few Olivers also. He may be able to shed some light on the subject to. I like the row crop Olivers. They're pretty neat. But, then again, I like em' all.....

I have a 1948 Oliver 60 which was my uncle's tractor and my brother bought his 1946 Oliver 70. I always liked the sound of the 6 cylinder Oliver. Where I lived there was quit a few Olivers as there was a dealer very close by. I am an Allis collector as that was the first tractor I drove, a Model B. Have 6 Allis's I agree, that is the good green.

I have a '47 model 60 that Grandpa bought new. It's a pretty nice tractor ride tractor, very easy to drive and cheap on gas. About the same power as a C. That Oliver roller was not built by Oliver. What you see is called a 'Power Pak'. Oliver built tractors without wheels and axles for equipment manufacturers to install on their equipment. That roller might have been made by Tampo. Lull was another buyer of Oliver Power Paks to build forklifts and other equipment on. If you like Oliver tractors and are interested in subscribing to a magazine comparable to the Old Allis News, Oliver Heritage is one of the best.

Guys your gonna kill me,lol. There is a man who works on Oliver 5 minutes from the new house. I stopped in today and we talked about the 55o and a 1550. He said I would probably like the 550 the best, being I have a small farm, but they don't have power steering and that's something I got to have, so I didn't do any real dealing, but I almost did. The 1550 is a BIG tractor for the hp it has. I also checked on the 170 down below me in Athens and it had some trouble issues with the hydraulics, and he says it leaks everywhere.
