 Topic: Oil Viscosity??

The vehicle that I run calls for 5W20 oil, my wifes 5 year old 'newer' buggy calls for 5W30 oil. I would like to consolidate oils but am unsure which viscosity to stock up on  Thanks

Consult the owners manual of both vehicles, most give different ‘preferences’ of weights of motor oil. If both have a common grade in that list, go with that one.

manufacturers changed to 5W20 , a thinner oil, to help gas mileage. Most of those motors were originally 5W30 type....... If a newer auto requires 5W30, its normally because it works harder ( like a turbocharger) and needs a thicker oil for extra heat.

then there's the 'winter-summer' thing. you need different oil based upon the temperature..coruse with CC warming up the world, you won't need a 'winter grade' oil anymore.....

Hunch only, but your vehicle is older, has some wear and some clearance, 5W30 would be just fine for yours. And still 5W for easy flow at start up. Do as you will.

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus, it calls for 5w-20, most of its life I used 5w-30 full synthetic. Tried 5w-20 a couple different times, but oil consumption always increased. So whatever mpg gain there may have been, was canceled out by the increased oil usage.

Thanks . My 5.4 is pushing 195,000 miles, the wifes buggy is 128,000 . Her Nissan Rogue is not T/C though in response to another poster  . Thanks guys

I haven't changed viscosity between "summer/winter" since 1998  !!!

Over 350,000 miles on my 1999 Toyota 3.0 V-6 Camry. 1 quart in 5,000 miles. Using Castrol 5w-30 GTX motor oil. Never had to open remove the pan or heads. Runs strong as a new one.

Stock up on both. It’s not a good idea to use other than what the manufacturer recommended.

Ya, me neither. There's usually a recommendation that covers a very large range of operating temperatures on anything I've owned for the last few decades.

Some vehicles today require full synthetic, but with 195,000, maybe you better not switch., just stock up on both oils. and just label them 'HIS' and 'HERS' just so you know which is which.
