I've been looking at how my WD is marking its territory with oil. Don't care much for the marking and want to try and attack a few of the bigger leaks.

The main one I'm seeing appears to be coming from around the plate on the side of the engine. According the parts diagram, it looks to be the Push Rod Cover.

How common is that gasket to leak? Anything I can do without pulling that cover off or do I have to take off the cover and replace the gasket. What do I need to be aware of if I do have to pull the cover off?

What is crazy is it appears to leak even when the engine is turned off. I have some nice puddles under it even though I have not started it in a month or two.

With the age of the tractor...any and all gaskets can leak especially since the time since the last OH is a mystery.

Gaskets for the engine are readily available...including the push rod cover plate.

If you replace the gasket (its easy to do) make sure you clean it off good and make sure the plate is straight before reassembly.

No value in the use of magic potions to fix oil leaks. 

The valve cover and side covers are pretty easy to replace with basic tools. The oil pan is a bit trickier due to the separate pieces.

How common is that gasket to leak???  It's over 60 years old!!!

There is nothing that can be done without taking the cover off - it's not a big job.  Scrape off the old gasket material from the cover and the block, put a new gasket on with some Permatex and bolt it back on.  It doesn't get much easier than that.

So, it sounds like the hardest part will be making sure my distributor doesn't turn while it is removed?

Or can the plate be removed without removing the distributor? It doesnt look like much room there.

Are you sure it is the push rod cover? It could be the valve cover right above it. These old tractors develop lots of leaks and oil has a tendency to run in lots of different places .

I thought I knew the names, but when I look at the parts diagram it doesnt match what I thought I knew. Going from block up, you have the block & push rod cover. Then a head gasket and the head. Then a gasket and the valve cover. Right? However, the parts diagram calls it a rocker arm cover and rocker arm gasket, not valve cover.

The head is dry between the cover and the plate. I dont observe any oil around the spark plugs.

Oil filter base may be the bigger leak. Base gets over tightened causing it to warp.      MACK

I thought about that. But, I really think it looks like it is coming out of the plate.

But then again, if I am doing the plate, I will have to remove the oil filter base anyway and I can inspect it at that time and replace the gasket while I'm at it.

Just did this on my wd. Distributor doesn't,t need to come off. Also get a new gasket for the oil filter base. Should only take you an hr.

And if/when I remove the push rod cover, is there anything that I should inspect behind it?
