I've got a JD 1219 MOCO that needs the reel rebuilt (bushings, caps, pins) and I just don't think it will be worth the cost. I only have about $600 in the machine and I've heard of people modifying these to run just like sickle mowers. I would have to remove the reel and cut the ramp out right above the cutter bar. I would also take the rollers off and sell them and probably get my money back (hopefully). I would probably have to add some bracing. Anybody else done this type of thing?

Here's what we're talking about

I'm only cutting about 20 acres maybe twice a year so speed isn't really a concern. Getting the grass down is the main concern

I would not like to start cutting hay again without a reel. I remember
the mowers and that was not pretty.

I had a 1207, and it was a good mower, better'n a New holland 469, could cut wetter, better.  When It came time to get a new one, though, I went with a drum mower, through what was then carter and carter, in tenn.  About 3 grand, with shipping, about 10 years ago, Haymaxx brand copy of a reese.  Has fewer moving parts, blades are cheap.  only real complaint is that it will golf slice a rock, right at you, if it's the right size rock.

Carter and Carter split, new brand is Haymag, basically same machine...Thumbs Up

I would like a drum mower. I have an older kuhn disc mower but it needs a pto shaft, hydraulic cylinder rebuilt, and a couple of skid shoes. I figured I could get the last out of the sickle machine without spending money on it and make some cash to fix the kuhn.

I'm curious on how much you will make on selling the parts. Have you tested the market on any of the items?

I listed the whole machine on craigslist for parts at $800 obo. The conditioning rolls are worth that. It stayed on there for a couple of months and had a couple of bites but nobody ever showed.
