So I bought this small combine to replace my G since it has better steps and a hydraulic swinging auger. Lower back issues kinda forced to me! Finally was able to get my little weedy patch of beans combined yesterday backed it. In the shed to unload and the dang unloading auger doesn't work. Any of you guys run a Massey? And run into this issue? Where to start looking, as the bearings and belt all look good! Thanks for any help. Kurt

So I put a pipe wrench on the drive shaft of the unloading auger and could turn it both directions with a little effort. But start the combine and nothing. The auger still doesn't turn.

Yes it would have been! I couldn't find one under 7500 for a F2 and didn't even look at M or L's as I don't need one that big. As I'd like to still have most equipment shedded.

It is mechanical drive engaged by a lever in the cab which engages a belt that drives a bunch of roller chains and bevel gears. All the bearings seem good along with the chains. The upper bevel gears also look good and not binding however I can't get to the lower ones as the bin is full! But it doesn't seem like they are over riding either. So I just don't know. As I said I can turn the whole works with a pipe wrench!

I can only guess , but I would look for a key out of a pulley or a pin missing somewhere. Get someone to slowly engage it and look where the shafts are not turning. Please be careful and keep all your fingers!!! No loose clothing and all that safety stuff.

When you engage the unloader, what does turn and what doesn't?

After all day yesterday pulling all shields and shoving a old shirt in the auger to stop the flow I took the lower shield to see the lower bevel gears look good too along with the bearings. Then I had to get pig and calf feed so I went to the mill. Got talking to a guy and he said it sound like your belt. So after getting home and the oldest boy got home we pryed up on the belt and it started to turn. Almost broke my arm doing so but atleast now I got a belt ordered.

There is a reason those old Massey's are way cheaper than a Gleaner.  My great uncle traded a worn out 1969 square back 55 John Deere on one back when they first came out in '78 and he had all kinds of problems with that thing from day one. The engineers from Brantford even flew down to work on it a couple of times.  When it wasn't in the shop that 540 could never keep up with dad's flat screen Deere 4400 diesel in beans.

The four cylinder Perkins in that 540 was very reliable though, and it used significantly less fuel than the Deere 4400 did to cover the same number of acres.

Whenever you park that 540 for the season pin the clutch pedal down.  From under the cab pull the pedal down and stick a bolt through the hole that is drilled right below the pedal.  If you don't, it will stick and you will have to take the clutch assembly off and disassemble it to get it unstuck.

Got the new belt on and it worked! Woohoo. Back in business! And with all that the old belt looks good but it sure is stretched.

That's ok I knew going in why they were cheaper I just needed a machine with hydraulic swing auger! On the plus side it sure does have better steps than gleaner for me to get up there at this point. Thanks for the heads up about the clutch!

540's were a over sized version of 300. We sold a bunch of them because of the price for small farms. And were very good machine in their day!

That is interesting information about the clutch on the Massey combine.  That's a problem I have with my 750 this fall, although I've had it around 10 years and never had it stick before.
