I am working on my friend IH 300 utility, it will not start. It had been spit sputtering and flaming out the exhaust before it finaly died. Now all we get is popping back thru the carb but not actually firing. Wont even hit on starter fluid. Went thru ignition, good spark. Good compression, carb looks good. Rockers loose, drained all old gas added new. I thought maybe he got his plug wire mixed up but they appear to be in order as long as number one is in fact the front cylinder. Running out of ideas, could the cam have come out of time? Any ideas? Thanks,JM

I would suspect a bad plug wire. Do a complete tune up, plugs,  wires, points, condenser, cap, roter , unless you want to chase it around. If it still acts up, look at the fuel supply, but I'll bet it's in the ignition.

Ignition timing. Distributor slipped or the gear drive pin sheared or the gear teeth have ground off and slipped out of time.

Sure sounds like it's way out of time. It don't help much to have good compression, good fuel supply and good spark, if the spark comes at the wrong time.
It's pretty easy to check, if you pull the plugs. Put you thumb over number one plug hole and crank  by hand till you feel compression. When that piston gets to the top, you should get a spark at number one plug.

I agree with Charlie and R.W. I can tell you from first hand experiance that those old tractors are very picky when it comes to timing. Your distributer cap may have been a little lose and just moved a gradual bit over time.

All the ignition including the coil has been replaced, I went out after dark to check spark. Nice fat blue arc. Rotor button is on correct plug wire. Maybe gears on distributer are worn, pin partly sheared. The cam could not be to far off or the compression would be affected. Flame out the exhaust, spit sputtering seems like timing. I will pull the distributer next. Thanks, JM

Pull the plugs and and pull the dist cap and roll the motor frontwards and backwards while watching the rotor. This will tell you if it has a lot of slack in the timing gears.

Part it out and get a D15 II.  Failing that, an F20 would be much nicer to run than a 300U.  Very few machines are more miserable for the operator.  I guess I'm biased though, Dad had one when I was young and it was probably more than an 8 year old should have been driving, especially with no power steering.  I don't hate much, but I did hate that tractor!

If memory serves Farmall and AC used different firing orders.  I have been around tractors that ran but were wired up all sorts of wrong.  Check the order before getting too carried away. Also, take a plug out and time it by the compression.  I have seen plenty of distributors that got put on wrong, so they simply re-timed the wires in the cap, hence, number one aint where it is supposed to be, but it worked fine then.  Etc.  Good luck!

IH was good at breaking the cam gear loose from the shaft. At least the Ms, 400s, 450s were good at it. Many have the gear welded to the shaft.
