Hey fellas. Right now I'm using an old John Deere 214 square baler that I borrow from my dad to put up about 500 alfalfa bales a year for neighbors. One of the gentlemen that I sell big rounds too noticed me struggling with the old girl last time and said he and his brother had a New Holland 269 they bought new to use on 15 "idle acres". They used the baler for roughly 7-8 years then parked it in the quonset. It still sits there to this day and after talking with his brother they offered it to me for 1800. I have never been around these new Holland balers, so if you have any experience with them please chime in. Will it be better than a John Deere like I'm using now? What do I need to look out for? I looked yesterday and it is clean! Still has paint on the original chains and the pickup is still covered in paint. I think a wash would make it like new. Thanks for all the help in advance!

It's a very good baler. Look for wear. You indicated that it has little, based on the fact that little paint is worn off. Check the knotter. Do the gears look worn? Consider that a new baler will cost well over ten times the $1800 price. Without me seeing the baler, I'd say it looks like a good deal.

Thanks Doug! He has always been a fair buyer and I think he will be a fair seller as well.

Thanks old farmer. My only concern is price. It's hard to find a fair price for old hay equipment around here as there really isn't any hay ground to speak of in our area and so there really isn't any old equipment left in the area either. He looked on tractor house and found them between 2 and 3 thousand and also talked to an old auctioneer and he gave him the same numbers.

I paid $600 for a excellent condition NH 268, this might help give you an idea. Always shop around before making a final decision. I have found that the NH balers are very easy to work on if you ever have to. Good luck and happy haying!

Does the baler have a 2 or 3 joint pto and does it have what I think they called a super sweep pickup? If it has a 3 joint and super sweep it worth more.

I have used both the jd and nh square balers I like the nh better. The jd parts cost more and for some reason even though the knotters are very similar the jd had alot more trouble with knots stuck on the billhook. So check the knotters the first thing to check is that the pivots are not all worn out and floppy if they are the knives will be almost impossible to adjust right mine was like that when I got it. Had to have both knotters sent to a machine shop and sleeved. Next when you lower the knotters they should almost stop on the wiper rubbing the billhook. If all that looks good then check the hay dogs and springs. The springs are pretty cheap but if they are weak it won't tie Knotts the knot will be there but will pull out. Also take a good look at the feed system. I still struggle some with my feed setup not sure why the thing liked to loose a wheel on the roller and then give trouble with the tracks. But it would take it over a jd anyday. I put up about 7000 bales so far this summer and the only breakdowns where dog springs and the wheel thing I mentioned I think you could count the broken bales on one hand this summer. I have the nh 565

Thanks everyone. Didn't really pay attention to the amount of joints in the driveshaft. Also how do you tell if it's the super sweep? Will this have more capacity than the 214 Deere?

Super sweep has closer spaced teeth. Maybe twice the number that is on the other style, 5 to 6 in apart instead 10 to 12 in. May be the numbers are
little closer than what I said, been awhile since I looked at one. Just found a place that said 3in super sweep, 5in on regular, 43teeth compared to 21. More teeth tend to pickup hay better.

269 won't have SS teeth.  I sold one that I paid $250 for, back in the 80's a coupla 5 years ago, got $2500, on the first ask. It was moderately worn. things to check for are  flywheel shear pin hole, for excessive wear,  packing system plunger for missing/dented teeth, bale knife and shear, for sharpness/wear, plunger for tightness, safety for dents, and hay dogs springs for breakage, and chamber wedges for rust out.

I think the super sweep didn't start until 273 or so.

We had a 269 with super sweep. According to nh 269 was the first to have ss.
There were not a lot that had ss. I have only seen a few, even with all the farms I was on when selling equipment.

Years ago I had a 269 wire tie with super sweep pick-up and long tongue with 3 joint pto. It was a great little baler and made a perfect bale. I bought it used and knew nothing about it. Used it for years with no problems.

We had a 269 with super sweep also. That was Grandpa's baler. When Dad went on his own, he got a 273 with standard pickup. Dad re-joined Grandpa on the home farm and we used both balers for years doing 24,000 bales a year with very little trouble out of either baler. If it looks as good as you say it does and you believe what the seller says about the amount of use it has seen, then I think it would be a real steal for you at that price and give you decades yet of good service.

Thanks everyone. Took dad over this morning to look at it (he's been around square balers his whole life). Dad thought it looked great didn't see hardly any wear on it at all it has the long tongue with three joints original jack original tires original owners manual and has the hay wagon hitch on the rear. One tire is flat so that may need a tube but he feels it could be a great deal. Think we may see if the owner will let me use it on this last cutting before we finalize any deal. Thanks again for all the help.

I'd use it to be sure but it sounds good. I bought a 273 a couple of years ago and have had 0 problems once I got it adjusted. Get a manual and follow it step by step for all adjustments and you'll be good.

Yes, go over it check all chain adjustments, lube them if needed. Keeping the chains adjusted is important to keep everything in time and working properly.
You take care of it and it will treat you good.

Yup the chain adjustments are important i just spent the day working on getting my timing sorted out because the main drive chain got loose and jump time. Took me a while to figure out why the plunger was out of time.

Well guys I talked with the owner of the baler again and we will be digging it out and getting it outside later this week. He had told me a while back that when they put this land in the idle acre program his brother and him bought a brand new sickle mower rake and this baler. Well today while talking to him he informed me that the rake was sitting out back somewhere and his brother and him would like to give the rake to me as a set with the baler. Needless to say I think we are going to buy the baler at his price no dickering!
