Hello all,
My wife's parents are in the market for a square baler.  We've decided to scale back the farming operation, many factors were involved here.  Also, my mother-in-law and I decided to start a pumpkin patch.  They happened across an online listing for an international model 46 the other day.  It looks all right from the picture but we'll have to go look at it first.  It's somewhat local, wich is good because we aren't really equipped to haul it.  So, does anybody have any advice about this machine?  Good, bad, things to look out for with them?  Also, what would be a decent price for one?  Anything you can tell me would be good.
Thanks,
Brad

I have one . No real complaints. That knotter does not function like any other balers knotter.
Once you get it figured you'll be better off.

I have one that I use to bale aluminum siding with. Seems like a pretty tough baler to me.     MACK

My dad bought a new IH mod. 45? back when I was just a kid. It was absolutely the worst baler EVER built. Even with IH twine and countless trips to the field by service rep. it was rare to bale over 50 bales(most of time less)   without the knotter messing up. It was the only thing that ever made my dad use foul language. He only kept it 2 yrs. and traded it for a new mod. 68 NH and problem was solved. He always said that baler aged him 10 yrs. in a 2 yr. time.

Couldn't give me an IH square baler they have the reputation for being the worst about not tying of all of them all.Get a New Holland or a John Deere,I have an Oliver because I bought it cheap, makes a real nice bale but if I break it it'll probably be scrap because of the parts situation

IH knotters are different that all others and parts are starting to be an issue. You either liked or hated IH balers. Go with a Deere or NH. In a smaller baler a Deere 24t is great and a 336 even better. NH the 268-269,273-275 and the newer 310-311 were all good balers with plenty of parts both new and used available. Tom

I agree, a New Holland baler will make you a happy farmer.  Of course, it doesn't matter what kind you get, there is always the chance of getting that one lemon!

I have an IH425 that I use for 1000 or so hay and straw bales.
It may be different though since it was built in Great Britain. The knotters are standard design.I set them up using a New Holland manual.Seemed the same.
  Parts are a problem.

Personally, I believe it's hard to beat a Hesston inline baler, starting with a 4600 up to the newest (now called a MF and painted red).  Most parts are still available even for the 4600's and they make a solid, square bale.  Knotters aren't too touchy either.

Gary, I am curious as to your Oliver baler.  My cousin had one a 55? I think.  The bales were slightly smaller than a NH bale but that thing baled a lot of hay with few problems.  The bale feed chamber was shiny and devoid of paint from so much use.  Just have never heard of anyone still having one and wondered about yours.

Mine is a 62-T the first one with the rotary flow hay feed, bought it at an auction for $200
it had sat in a barn for about 15 years before they took it to the sale I found out.
It makes a great bale always the same and has a hydraulic thing that keeps the bale
tension the same never saw anything like it.

I got a Hesston 4600 last summer after using NH balers for 30+ years.
Its' worst bale is equal to about the best bale I got from any of the NH balers I have own or used.
I paid 2x's for it what the same age NH would have cost me and the 4600 is worth the money.
In my research, I talk to two hay farmers (80,000 to 100,000 bales per year), they both had brought a new MF and NH in the last 2-3 years and the only time they have the NH's in the field is when they are trying to beat the rain. Another hay farmer (50,000 to 60,000 bales per year) had just replaced his 25 year old inline with a new MF, but was keeping his old one as a spare.

If something lets go, dont scrap it, try to sell it online, there is a good Oliver and White Tractor Facebook group, or a post on Yesterday's Tractors should help get it sold for much more than scrap.

x2! It has to be worth something to an Oliver guy! I've never even seen an Oliver baler before. I'd say they're on the rare side.

Thanks for all the input here guys, especially the video.  It had a lot of good points to check.  Like I said, we'll have to go look at the machine and see what it's like.  We don't need to put up much  hay with it, it's mostly just for a hobby.  I'd also like to bale some straw for the pumpkin patch with it.  At the same time though, we don't have time to waste messing with a baler that doesn't work half the time.  I think we'd rather have a JD or NH, but this one s available and close to home so it caught our eye.  In the end it's the farm's money, not mine.  I'm just helping to manage things and get information to help lead things in the right direction.  Also, we're not planning to bale any aluminum siding, but it's always good to know the option is there.
Thanks,
Brad

I know this might sound cliche given the subject, but Allis Chalmers makes a great square baler. Just sayin'

I had a 720
That was a baling son of a gun.

Anothe thing about my IH 46. With the IH knot you can make bricks and those strings won't break.

Agree 100%!!!

Everyone was good at something. Allis was tractors and combines, Deere planting equipment, and NH was hay equipment. Smart farmer has a multi color fleet. Uncle has my late grandfather’s NH for sale.

I agree.  Dad always told me New Holland made great hay equipment.  He has three of their side delivery rakes and from what I've seen of them they are bulletproof.  We're still looking around for now.
Later,
Brad

When NH was NH, it was very good.  I gots a 256 rake, had a bearing go in the main gearbox(main shaft and pinion gears).  Ordered all the parts, 2 gears, 2 brgs, shaft, seal from NH (FNH, to be precise).  Shaft was out of round (not very noticeable, when I assembled it, and pressed the gear on, one gear backed itself off, and I hadda do all 4 hrs of work, again.  Did a field expedient repair, welded the gear, to the sumb!tch shaft, and reassembled... Been workin for about 10 years, thataway!Wink
