got a guy who has a wood splitter with a allis chalmers engine and it has a serial number aw4551-1 any idea of what it is? and needs a magneto for it.

That sounds like a casting number. Is it raised, or stamped into the metal?

Look on that plate on the Clutch Housing.
 
First 3 numbers should be the cu. in, and rest of number is serial no,

NOT a 226 ,guys guess is wrong ,He was only guessing right !!! ., It is a 149 engine like a D14 .Take a GOOD look at this picture  ,check out the V - Cover and Govenor

Mag or distributor is missing. My vote is a G-149 Power Unit.  Lots of Power for a wood splitter.
