 Topic: No till Seed drill

Im looking into getting a no till seed drill and will be using my D17 gas series 4 to plant with. I would like to get a 10ft or 13ft but some 10ft and 13ft requires 75hp. What drills are would be good to use?

i drill with a 10 foot ih disc drill with my wd i can drill with The engine at almost an idle but i probley mostly run not quit half throttle pulling the hills

A 17 will not pull a good no till drill. A good no till drill has enough steel in it they really weigh up. I have a 15 foot 750 and it’s a perfect match for my 8050 o way would my 6080 successfully handle it. I’ve rented a 10 foot and it’s a match for a 6080. Only drill a 17 would handle is a conventional till one.

Couple years ago I rented a 8’ Great Plains no til drill and pulled it with my D17 IV gas, pulled it no problem. I’m sure a 10’ would be no issue. I don’t think how hard it pulls is an issue but more of how much drawbar weight it applies vs how you have the tractor weighted.

Big difference in drills I guess but a D17 wouldn't pull the drill the local Coop rents out.

I used a Great Plaines 10 ft notill for Native grass seeding behind a AC 185.
I would recommend the 7 ft notil behind the D17IV, they are a lot heavier the regular drill

Not knowing your full path .. Another option is broadcast 15% heavier seed rate and use a harrow, drag, or disk set to low angle so it doesn't dig just stirs the seed in so the birds don't eat the grain.
I had a good stand of Winter Rye broadcasting and low angle disk. I used that to plant corn and beans. Several different experiments with them, the most success was letting the corn/beans emerge the roll the rye flat. Not having a crimper just a roller (cultipacker can work) I went down and came back in the same row to bend over any rye that tried to stand back up after the first pass. Worst experience was the disk the rye in and plant, weeds got a running start.
Myrorhyzal Fungus and the Worms live in the top five inches, that's were you want to minimize disruption so they don't need recovery time. Worms are as good as half a dozen cows per acre fertilizer, and work for free if left alone.

I think a Haybuster 107 ten foot no till drill would be a good fit behind your D-17 Series 4 tractor. If your D-17 will handle a ten foot wheel disk it should handle a ten foot Haybuster drill.

A D17 will handle a 10’ Haybuster no till no problem. Something must be set up wrong if it won’t. My best friend has one and I have borrowed it to reseed 2 fields.
