saying they will be allowed to max out at 91,000 lbs instead of 80,000 lbs. can't help but think it may have something to do with the new electric trucks, as the batteries weight a whole bunch and would take away to much paying cargo weight! anyone heard anything about this?

The rules are being changed to accommodate the electrics. Steer axle weight on a Tesla is 18,500 EMPTY, loaded exceeds Federal interstate limits at over 20,000 requires special tires. The advertised weight of a Tesla Semi is deceiving at best, they give weight without battery then total weight while noting ‘ADD Tires and some drive train’ where the base weight of the beast is over 27,000 pounds No Trailer. A Really heavy diesel semi tractor full on fuel is less than 21000. A light version is around 17-18000.
Highways will take a beating.
Are Bridge Formula rules that have been on the books since before the Interstate system evolved, the powers that be want them either edited to fit or discontinued.

just wait for the guv to mandate(aka LAW) requiring  businesses to have fast charging plugs at every loading bay for them to use (free of course...)...

sure hope they're not using regen braking... man if that computer failed..massive damage and lawsuits to follow.

All electric vehicles use Regen Braking, especially trucks, similar in value to Jakes or Compression Brakes on trucks, Dynamic Brakes on trains.

BIL was fast to respond to me when spoke of the weight on a Tesla Semi, the METRO STL All Electric Buses weighed 15% MORE than conventional Diesel buses, had only a four to five hour service time charge rating, extended to nearly 7 but not quite with regen braking.  And his BTW, out of 12 buses they purchased, at most are TWO operating each day due to faults, failures, cooling system leaks on the batteries.  Seems the charging of these creates MASSIVE Resistance Heating.  He asked the electrical staff how much KW the buses required for a recharge, these are NOT based on kwh but on amp hour rate as to amount of energy required, 4 buses on a 7200v step down to 4160 transformer to feed the charger, DEDICATED for bus Charging and takes MORE energy to feed 4 at one time for 7 hours than run the entire bus repair garage for 24 hours.

Did you all see the new New Holland and Farmall electric 75 horse utility tractors?

I contacted CNH and told them, in order for me to have confidence in this new electric tractor, I need to know what my ROI will be on it? How much is a replacement battery seeing as how there is only a 3 year  warranty on battery.
And what is the expected life of the battery?

As typical CNH all I got back was "contact your dealer"

Pretty much why the only blue tractor I have says FORD on it, LOL

So the Tesla semi-trucks could be running super singles on front like a tandem axle snowplow or cement mixer truck?
When carrying 11' snowplow & an 11' front benching wing they use 22,000 - 24,000 lb front axle & springs with 445 x 22.5 super singles.
They steer like a toboggan on a slick road on those wide tires.

No on SS tires, too much rolling resistance.  They receive a special Compound Rubber 18PR 24.5, VERY High Profile to reduce rolling speed for heating.

Tesla truck Battery weighs in excess of 10,000 pounds, Five TONs, has been Estimated for costs as high as $120,000 Just for a replacement unit.  For the Standard Tesla Car, $22,000(Battery Alone) and lifespan indeterminate so far due to variables they cannot control.  High Heat, Deep Cold and high cycle rates of discharge recharge all have factors on life.  Low Mile city use autos have already been on the road for 6 years no replacements but also not deep cycling.

So to accommodate the New EV trucks there is now a proposal to drop the Excise Tax on trucks that is on every new truck - unsure if trailer excise tax is also included .
BUT if the tax is removed looked for that revenue source to be passed onto consumers somehow . Just like EV passenger vehicles pay no road tax in most states everyone else is paying the tax for them to use the highways

License plates are at least 3X for a electric vehicle over a fossil fueled one in Illinois.

I wonder how they will break up apportionment licensing?

Your IFTA sticker report and you need to turn in a KWH receipt showing when and where recharged and mileage report .

Last I heard only 5 states now passed laws on separate charge for EV plates .
Now if you pay to charge unsure if the pay chargers record and submit sales tax or not to state .

California is saying shippers just need to cut down the weight of goods shipped .
So more trucks to haul the same volume of freight , - some genius setting at a desk has solved the problem .

I have several trucker friends that no longer go into CA and flat reject any loads coming or going that way. If the "Sheeple" would stand up and vote for what's right out there kicking the current politicians to the curb, much of this garbage would subside.

That's not political, just the way it needs to be.

I think putting 10,000lbs of highly incendiary chemical materials in the bottom of an Over The Road tractor trailer is a fantastic idea!  They can ignite them while the truck is parked under a concrete and steel overpass... or into the front of a 30-story office building...

They should do it with passenger busses in high-density urban environments, too!

Not that Thermal Runaway is much of a hazard:

It really isn't a big deal... mostly just a slight inconvenience:

but hey, the big heads of organized 'media' are all going green, so electric is the only future:

Even the emptyheaded newspeople love them:

The revolutionary microprocessor technology drives for you, and keeps you safely locked inside...

Next time you hear about a massive traffic pileup on a freeway, just be glad you're in an electric vehicle, where you can just shut off the battery and instantly be safe.  With no terrible petroleum in the tank, it's absolutely harmless to keep in your garage:

What will soon happen, is pretty obvious:

Insurance companies will stop covering EVs.  Homeowner's insurance will be suspended for the presence of an EV, or an electric scooter, or a hoverboard...

They're worse than swimming pools, trampolines, yard-darts, and the rest of history's 'really risky' things.

Jay, I'm not too keen on the volatility of the 18650 Lithium Ion battery.  Compared to other batteries, they can store a substantially higher amount of energy...

But compared to liquid motor fuels, they're much more volatile...
... and practically impossible to 'put out'.

Aqueous Film Forming Foam puts out liquid motor fuelsnicely.  Even dry chem extinguishers can do it.

NOTHING that's commonly around stops the fire from thermal runaway of an 18650.  Not water, not foam.  Not even burying them in dirt... (but it does help contain the fireworks)
