Guys-  I'm building another machine... a Trommel... to separate dirt from rock... and I need a form for the drum.  Woke up middle of the night (as I frequently do) realizing that a tractor rim... really tall one, would do nicely... i could cut it in half (right down the seam) and use one piece at each end, with angle-iron ribs between the two.

What's the LARGEST diameter tractor wheel that I'd be able to find in the 'salvage price' realm?

I see 46"ers... is there anything larger?

Have to ask how BIG of a trommel ? You could use a 6 x12 water tank, though not mine(wife likes to water her veggies..).. just cut into 'slices' ,then weld bars for the length....

I put 1 set of 50" tires on a ford FWD tractor about 15 years ago. I know they are out there. Good luck with your mochine.

Around here a lot of tractors are running 46"and 54" rims but there not avaliable in the salvage price realm. 38" rims are salvage to free price. If you just want a metal circle you could get on rolled any size you want.

Yeah, Dave... I could... but HER rule always applies... I can have whatever I want... just as long as I don't BUY anything...  Wink  I could take a piece of steel, and put regular bends in it to yield an octogon (or a cetagon...  or more (dozigon?), but a tractor rim, cut down the center, yields two symmetrical rings that once caged, will roll nicely on some rollers I already have here...  there's no sense in...

... fasten your seatbelts... get a good grip...

Re-inventing the WHEEL...  LOLWacko

50's would be nice... my little loader bucket is 43" wide, so I'd be able to drop in with plenty of clearance, and very little 'chute' magic.

Not gold mining in a typical sense.  My dad built additions onto his house down on the riverfront, and the soil there is dense, black, and beautiful... I got about 70 tons of it from the excavation, with the only caveat being that there's plenty of limestone chunks from little chips up to the size of basketballs entrained in the 'black gold'.

Now, I can use the rocks just as well as I can use the soil... if I can separate the rock, anything 2" and down would be perfect for my driveway.  The bigger pieces would either be used for landscape and erosion control, or crushed and screened for use as base under future pavement, or bolstering the (currently gravel) driveway.

In the future, I'll be breaking up lots of really old concrete around the farm, so I'll be sorting and screening those spoils as well, and crushing the concrete, separating out the steel, etc., so a big, stout trommel has a busy future here.

Plus... a trommel does a great job of breaking loose bark off firewood.  ;-)
