My son's 170 lost power out of nowhere. It will start but has no throttle response, no power, it can barely move itself. It spits and sputters and occasionally back fires. We checked compression and have between 168 and 175 on 4 cylinders. We also replace the manifold gaskets as they looked to be leaking.
Looking for advice and ideas on where to go next. Thanks |

I'm guessing by the compression numbers that it's a gas correct?

What have you checked on the electrical system? Timing ok? Coil and condenser? Good solid connections everywhere on all wiring from the battery through the switch and to the coil?

Carb sounds plugged up. Have good gas flow to it? AaronSEIA

I'd say ethanol ate the soft parts in the fuel system.

Sounds like a bad condenser, my D17 did the exact same thing.

Look for plug in gas line... look in the tank and see if the inlet is pugged... check flow at carburetor take drain plug out of float bowl and drain a big bean can full and see how fast it flows... ...Maybe jets are plugged in carb... Maybe need to drain water out of gasolene.... Mmm 'no throttle response' maybe you have governor spring break? Points burnt? , are they floating? Moisture got into the cap? Distributor rotor leaking spark? Check all plug wires...for continuity on solid copper wire, and resistance on carbon core. If none of above, coil could have gone bad... tho not as likely as a condensor pukin out. Make sure you have good current to the distributor and not a loose or broken wire or one taped up. |

Does it help to choke it? I had one that would start to sputter under load and I could choke it and it would come out of it. After a year of using the choke and constantly messing with the main jet screw I finally figured out that the main jet seat was not screwed in properly and would work its way out from vibration. Removed the jet, tightened up the seat and ran great from then on.

Not knowing what maintenance it has had recently, I would do a good tune up - plugs, wires, cap, condensor (or go electronic), rotor. Definitely go through the fuel system as well - clean out the tank, sediment bowl and give the carb a good cleaning. Replace the air filter as well. Carbs seem to be the most overlooked item when it comes to maintenance.

Thanks for all the input. He bought it last summer so we don't know how it was maintained. I don't get up there all that often but I'll take your advice with me on my next visit and let you know what we find out.

Always go with the easy fix first. If the problem suddenly appears it's either a slug of gunk in the fuel system, which the strainer should catch, or something electrical that failed suddenly.

Well I made it up to my son's place yesterday. We put new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and condenser all in and it ran:). He said it's never sounded better since he's owned it. It still need other attention but getting it running was number one on the list. Thanks to DJS for the parts and the timely shipping.
And a big thanks to all that offer advice and wisdom. Gary
