I got the pony motor on my 730 JD diesel running well but I have a question. Is there supposed to be some sort of ballast resistor going to the distributor? At $60 ea I don't want to fry the coils again.

I restored a 720 diesel. I new that resister was junk. But I always shut that engine off and never worried about it. Then one day I started the diesel, and ran out of gas. Forgot all about the switch. Pretty soon $240 worth of smoked coils comes up. This was in 1989, I can't imagine what those coils cost now.  Tim

It depends on where you buy them. John Deere gets $170 ea, All States Ag has new aftermarket for $59 ea. For the cost of the JD coils you can get the complete new distributor on Evilbay.
