Found this in my misc odds and ends . It's 4" X 4+1/2" with one corner off . Has what once was some kind of wired something on it . I wonder if it goes under the gas tank ? Looks like the choke rod was rubbing on it . Anyone have an idea ? Thanks

Might be the belt pulley shift lever, that goes under the gas tank, its totally flat, has 2 holes in it. Mounts right over the top of the belt pulley flange, RS front of the torque housing. A picture would help...
![]() Here is one I found of the shifter, its kinda dark, right under rear end of starter... Edited by DiyDave - 15 Jan 2019 at 5:48pm |

Wish I knew how to post a picture . I have it loosely bolted under the gas tank close to the sediment bowl. Dunno if that's where it came from . The holes lined up and the choke rod is rubbing in about the right spot . Still wonder what the electrical thing was . My tractor doesn't have a belt pulley Thanks

OK FINALLY I know something I can share ! I've got them on my D-14s... it's the bracket that holds the ballast resistor and the fuse. Jay

Thanks Jay . Dumb question . What's a ballast resistor? Also I guess I have it in the right spot ?

Ballast resistor is a little doo-dad, that lowers voltage, to the points, once engine is started, to give points a longer life...
![]() IIRR, the ballast bracket was smaller, and close to the dash. It may also be a voltage regulator bracket, based on the size you listed. again, IIRR, that VR bracket was closer to the front of the cavity, under the gas tank. Some replacement generators had the VR, mounted on the genny, so oft times that bracket became redundant...

Thanks , Dave . Whatever it is and did , it must not really matter . Tractor seems to run fine to me . Previous owner did put an alt on it . Ballast resistor makes sense as a switch would be kinda hard to reach from the driver's seat . Don't suppose our diesel D 15 would have one ?

Is this it? Plate that held the voltage regulator and fuse for the lights.

OK, was 1/2 right, sigh getting old..... yes VR was there well supposed to be...all 4 of my D14s I put alternators on them, 15+ years ago...don't ever recall SEEING the VR on any... I just checked my parts cat, D-15 same as d-14..least I knew the book was ! Ballast resistor limits current to points to about 4 Amps. Typically they are about 1.5 ohms in value. Without the resistor point will 'burn' ( bad arc and sparking ). jay

I have those days too, Jay. Seems like they are getting more regular as well.
I removed the voltage regulators from these plates (choke rods do rub on them) and installed ballast resistors near the coil, where they are accessible, when I converted my D14s to 12 volt, negative ground. Just curious, I didn't see any resistors listed in the parts catalogs. Did any of the D14s/D15s have ballast resistors from the factory, or were they all added during 6 to 12 volt conversions? In the parts catalog it looks like AC changed to "real" 12 volt coils on the D14s when they changed to 12 volt systems. It appears all D15s were 12 volt from the factory, and equipped with the 12 volt coil. |

I don't know about the original, factory setup..mine certainly weren't from the factory'.. I wired the ballast resistor between the coil and the distributor. EASY to get at, kinda 'floating' and never had it fail.... the 'correct cops' never come north opf the 49th , so I think I'm safe ! Jay

I'm sure mine wouldn't pass muster either; but they start, run, and work when I need them; the important stuff to me.

Thanks Jim . That's it . Sure doesn't have anything attached to it . Hope someone put a ballast resistor on when they did whatever they did . I'm also thinking all D 15's are 12 volt . Thanks for the help

When the 12v generator was changed to a 12v alternator, the coil didn't need to be changed, or resistor added. By the parts book the original 12 volt coils on the D15s did not need ballast resistor from what I see. They likely used a true 12 volt coil; meaning it was wound for 12 volts. If it is/was a running tractor most likely you don't need a resistor. The coil would have 1.5 ohms (+/-) resistance for 6 volts and about double (3-4 ohms) that for 12 volts.

Ok thanks . Looks like it's been disabled a long time . I'm going to hit it with some spray paint and bolt it back on .
