do you notice any difference in how they do vs. the seed potatoes
Are the ones you plant from the store more like the Russets from the store when you dig them or are they different when they are commercially produced.
Just curious about all that
When I was growing up, we had an older neighbor couple that always peeled their potatoes. They would peel them thick and eat the potato and plant the peels. From what I remember they always had potatoes to dig.

I was gonna start a new thread but since My Good Buddy done done it ,,,,I'll proceed,,, The only'ist thing I know bout potatos is that they are GOOD to eat,,,,  I've had them start growing in the bag on the bay window,,but figured they wasn't no good anymore ,,so out they go,,,, I guess I'm looking at yet another year of NO YUMMY,,,,  Bout 3 years ago, I had planted 6 more 3 year old crowns of ASPARAGUS and I got a few skinny shoots and left em grow on out and did not pick any that year to let the root system to get stronger,,,the following year I Got NUTTIN, Last year there were bout 5-6 shoots that come up and again,,I did not pick any. Those 6 shoots grew bout 3 foot then stopped growing! I got some of those fertilizer sticks and watered them every time I watered the pecan tree which I also fertilizered and got the biggest nuts than I had ever got ...but NO asparagus,,,,WTH,,,?? I been checking them this year and and,,,so far NARY A ONE shoot!! I went by Lowes and thwy had some 4 year bare root crowns with BIG root systems and have not planted until I'm sure last freeze is over,,sometime in May,,, What the heck,,,,????

aspergrass.. helped my late friend Rudy plant some. back in '76 or '77.. I used backhoe(new to me) , dug down 6', filled bottom half with 'well rotted cow  ', top half with mix of real nice 'garden soil', peatmoss and more . Those plants are STILL producing . Interesting that I can SEE those 2 rows from the satellite photo of the property !
Took me 3 years to bury the stuff next door before it finally 'rolled over'.

AW CHIT,,Jay,,,you really know how to hurt a guy that loves Asparagus,,,,,,  There ain't no telling how many times and places on my 5 acres that I have planted and transplanted that daNG stuff,,,,!!! I'll bet if I take my D14 and drive over and over that stuff,,it will start growing...!!

Joe, my readings took me to them liking Phosphate. Got a bag of Super Phosphate and threw it on the new plantings - one shoot is popping up now.

Dar...we about only eat them red taters, we think they have the best flavor when cooked on the grill over the other type taters. we did do a few russets one year along with the reds, really saw no difference in the amounts coming back to us. since we have a dog that LOVES raw taters and will go out each day and dig her own from the garden....i'm gonna try the 5 gallon bucket tater raising this year! i been gathering up food grade buckets all winter, i just gotta drill sum holes in them yet. Joe....when i was a little kid, my mom had a (i call it rotten) tater she found in the bottom of a sack of taters from the store. i told her i was gonna go plant it! she said it would never grow cuz it was from the store and i would need a "seed" tater! well....i planted it anyway! and gosh....it produced BIG TIME! the folks were really amazed by this...and thus always planted a few store bought taters every year. we always got alot of taters from them each year! Lars....not stored in any cabinet....but do keep both in the same building (cook shack), but not close together.

regular store taters can be planted for 3 years then you really need the seed taters. The seed ones seam to always do the best for us here. one year we couldnt get seed so we planted what was left in the basement and they made a few spuds but nothing like the seed did. Thats just what we found out be trying both ways. This year is going to be late planting here,--still waiting on the weather to get better so I can get the onion plants planted. been waiting since the 23'rd of last month. Hav tilled the ground 4 times now and it either rains and makes mud OR ground is froze again. Today it is snowing again, not sticking but cold/wind/wet and nasty! Have a couple thousand gallons of water collected for the garden so far. The other day the tanks were froze a couple inches on top so warm weather is still not here!

That reminds me of this ole chestnut...

Dad always planted kinnebecks, old gal and me always planted Yukon golds. Mom can't stand the Yukon golds and I don't like the kennebecks. I always ate them when I lived at home. Funny how a persons tastes change over the years. I think I'm gonna put up another raised bed in the garden, fill it with crappy straw mix outa the barn lot and plant 2 or 3 dozen hills of them yellow taters.

Well,,all you guys are making me want to try (again) a garden one more time,,,,all this ground is very rocky and mostly caliche,,, I've got four 24" tractor tires and am wondering if anyone uses them for raised bed gardening,,,and what do ya'll use to fill em for initial start? I've tried at least 10 times to grow asparagus both from seed and 3 year old crowns and no luck at all,,,,,,!!!

Joe, my Dad used tractor tires cut in half, (one tire, two beds) for raised beds. He filled them with compost that was broken down to dirt. As I recall things grew quite well. For taters I would suggest you have at least a foot of dirt, so you can hill them as they grow.

I've heard of people who dig a trench about a foot deep and put the 'seed' taters in and then cover with straw. When you want some, you just push the straw away and pick em up. No digging involved..... I've always been gonna try it and maybe i will this year!
Joe, I don't know what it is, but I can't get asparagus to grow either. I've tried numerous times with no luck. I've tried seeds and crowns also, no luck. I should have paid better attention to my grampa. He had a couple acres of the stuff and I think he just let it go wild. I dunno......I just don't have a green thumb.

i did pick a few stalks of the asparagas the other day, but now it's freezing the dog pool outside every night again, haven't checked the plot since. them sure were good off the grill!
