Hi Everyone, I am new here, I have read a bit and think my problem is related to fuel based on what was said here: http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=70740&title=g-keeps-faltering

But I thought I would ask for some re-assurance.  I am a vegetable farmer and really need the tractor to work and don't have a lot of time.

The symptoms:
I rebuilt the engine from the heads up two years ago reusing a lot of the old parts.  It was worked great for two years until Friday.  The battery was a bit low so I hand cranked it to get it going and then after about 30 minutes it hesitated (like there was no gas or spark) a couple of times then died.  After about 5 minutes I tried it again and it went for 10 minutes then the same thing.  I left it on the charger for two days and headed back out today.  I maybe got 15 minutes in then it did the same thing.  Every time if I wait 2-5 minutes it starts right back up.

The likely cause:
I am guessing it is the fuel.  On Friday I put new fuel in it before I headed out.  I am guessing that a fuel line is clogged and draining the sediment bowl of the carb.  After 2-5 minutes there is enough fuel to run for another 2-5 minutes then it dies again.  I didn't touch the carb during the rebuild 2 years ago.  

The solution:
I will head out and drain the tank and get some new fuel for it.  I will check and blow out the fuel lines to the carb and see if I can replace them locally.  I will buy a rebuild kit for the carb and get a local old guy to rebuild it.  I grew up with vw carbs and still don't like working on them.  

Any other ideas?  I don't think it is electrical because it seems to be so related to time.  The voltage regulator is still old and I think I replaced the coil 2 years ago.  Any reassurance or ideas would be appreciated.

JennaJane,  First let me welcome you to our Unofficial Allis Chalmers Forum.  You will find tons of help and information here.
Sounds like you are on the right track.  One other thought - I am certain others will chime in - is the coil and condenser.  When worn they overheat and cut out.  When cooled they will allow you to start up and run till they heat up again.
Wait till after you complete what you are doing with the fuel system.  Sounds like a thorough and complete job.

Welcome from Georgia!, check that tank good for sediment, could be stopping up the outlet, then after the engine dies it floats away. I'd clean my tank, lines, and the filter bowl / screen before I went after the more involved things.

Welcome to the forum.
As Bill stated it could be a faulty coil heating up and when it cools it works properly. A lot of the newer electrical parts are not of good quality anymore.
You can take the fuel line off to the carb then turn the fuel on. Watch the fuel flow into a bucket to make sure the flow is not restricted.
When the tractor sputters have you tried pulling the choke to see if it runs any better or does it die immediately like you turned off a key?
A few other questions for you,
Do you have a test light available for troubleshooting after the engine stops?
When the engine quits loosen the fuel cap and listen for a woosh of air. That is a sign of a improperly venting cap.
Did you use fresh gas or was it sitting in a can for a while? I don't think the symptoms are because of bad gas though.

You'll get plenty of great advice here.
I think you'll be able to get it running right without buying a lot of parts or other things.

Thanks for the warm welcome and ideas.

Got the gas tank off and drained it through a filter and not much sediment.  Took the shut-off valve off the bottom of the tank and sure enough it was full of crap.  I will clean it and get back to weeding my fields.  Hopefully that fixes things, it sure seems likely.

I sure love this little tractor!
