 Topic: my first tractor

I just got a 1949 c and its my first tractor.i picked it up for 450 and i think it was a good deal. the engine is locked up but over all the tractor is in pretty good shape. i would like to do a total restoration to this tractor and add hyd and put a 3 point hitch on. I would like to know if there is anything that i should just go over and check as normal things while i try to get it running. i would like to get it in working condition befor i tear it all apart for restoration. i also wanted to make it 12 volt. thanks for any help and like i said its my first tractor so im sure i have alot to learn.

Rather than take the time with all of the snake oil remedies to unstick an engine, just take the head off and take a look. You will know in 30 minutes what you are up against. Good luck and come back often, this is the best place on the www to get AC advice.

As John said. I have been there many times myself and never have I been sorry I didn't at least remove the head and pan. You are indeed taking the right path in getting it running before sprucing up and painting. Good luck

Sort of depends how stuck it is. I've freed up more than a few motors with a little ATF/Acetone mix down the plug holes and then letting it soak for a few days. Then putting the hand crank on it and giving it a little tug and away they go.
Also had some that required pulling the head and pan and unsticking them that way.

Freeing an engine is one thing, but rings are another story. It's a good way to end up with a oil burner, too. I'd at least pull the head and pan as stated above also....sounds to me like you aready know the steps you want to follow to do it right.

I vote for head removal too. One of the good points on a C is it's one of the most inexpensive tractors to work on. Engine parts are readily available new. Pretty much anything else you'll find on evilbay or some of the guys here. They were also designed so the guy who was a better farmer than mechanic could do most of his own repair work. This is also the best place to ask, "How do I..."

I'll add that a decent set of sockets and combination wrenches will get 95% + of what you need to do to get it running.

A lot of good advice on the engine, now for something that is just as important as getting it moving-- stopping it. I don't think I have ever seen (and I know I haven't operated) an old tractor that had halfway decent brakes.
I think most people used them until the brakes quit working, then used the "drop the implement and step on the clutch if its an emergency" method. I hate running into things when I am on a tractor.

i got all the pistons out and one connecting rod is bent. since im gonna restore this tractor and im already this far should i just go ahead and replace bearings and gaskits and then its done and over with? let me know what you think. when you rebuild one of these engines do you normally take everything to get checked at a mechine shop? thanks for any help!

Hiya, where in PA are you at? I'm right around State college and if you're close enough I could give you some help. Just finishing up my CA so we're in a similar ball game.
Some advice I would give you right now is while you are working on the engine, start spraying stuff down with penetrant. Saves you time waiting later. I don't know what "rust" condition its in, but I know with me that's what I did while I was working on something else. You said about converting it over to 12 volt. Are you planning on putting more lights on it or do you just prefer to have the 12 volt?

I do not know of anyplace that is a good yard around you. Bud Yuegling's in Gettysburg was at one time. Your best bet might be to stick with vendors on this site, and have the stuff shipped. Good to see lots of you young guys down there in central PA.

my first tractor....a brand new AC 7010 diesel back in 1980 (rented tractors before buying this one) still have it, still use it all the time, only things replaced/fixed...valve cover gasket, a new turbo, and an o-ring in the PTO, and one new PTO external shaft i broke this year! other that that oil/tires/batteries...oh yeah...1 new starter syninoid. however ya spell it)

Now you've done it! Just one is a hobby. Two is the start of an addiction. I now have 2 Cs(one is more of a parts tractor) of my own, 2 Bs(one of those is also more of an organ donor), and my grandads C down here trying to rehab/restore it. Also bought a B112 garden tractor with a mower and rototiller that came completely disassembled on 2 pallets. I don't buy anything that isn't stuck, worn completely out, badly broken, or torn into a million pieces. Just love a challenge(or maybe i'm just cheap.LOL!)
Anyhow, a B with a Woods mower is a great little unit if you have a lot of grass to mow. The later Bs had the same engines as the C. Engine serial number is on the carb side of engine, on the bellhousing flange. Will start with BExxxx or CExxxx and end with a G(for gasoline) or a K(for kerosene/distillate ). If the engine in your B has a CE series engine, it is 125 CI and the same as the C. Kerosene engines have lower compression pistons. If you happen to have one of these, and don't plan on restoring it back to "correct"(ie, running kerosene in it), gasoline pistons, rings, etc would work fine. Of course, you can get some different quality/performance levels in that, but there are plenty of good sources that advertise on here. They will gladly help you to find out what you want and lead you in the right direction to get it done as properly and inexpensively as possible.

they were off the tractor when i got it and i put them under the tractor when i pushed it there. trust me i did not run over anything i had to push it my self! can i ask what the hand lifts are for?

the only prep work they did was shake the can befor they sprayed. trust me they sprayed over anything that was on the paint.
