My 180 won't start

Hey new member here but I've been reading posts for a few years so thanks for the help already!
My 180 quit starting a few days ago. Both batteries were bad so I replaced those. Now when I push the start button nothing happens no clicks no cranks. I noticed the starter sparking a few weeks ago. I don't know what to check or what to do so any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, and yes, you most certainly have come to the right place.

What kind of condition are the battery cables in? Did you scrape them to bare fresh metal before connect to the new battery? How about the other end, especially the ground, where it connects to the chassis? Sometimes, even where the end is crimped on can be corroded and not provide a proper conductor. I have a fairly new policy as of a few years ago: If the cables are known to be over 15 years old, they get replaced with a new battery.

Another thing to do, is remove the starter. With a known good battery, or even a battery charger (I use one with a boost mode on boost), you should be able to connect to the starter and see if it engages. While you have the starter off, take some Emory Cloth and clean the surface that the starter contacts, as this is where the starter gets its ground connection.

Ok thanks. The i can see some of the wiring at the end of the cables where they ground to the frame and they're dark so idk if they're bad or not I have power and the batteries held when load tested.
I'll go mess with the starter and see what I can see.

Oh and the connectors are clean. I noticed some greasy residue when I removed the batteries idk if it was protector or dialectic grease

"Dark" wires means oxidized. I would disconnect where it connects to chassis, and scrape the chassis surface and the ground cable, at least.

Ok so you recommend new cables? i messed with the ground and cleaned it up some didn't seem to help. But I did put a screw driver on the solenoid and had someone turning over and it turns over now but won't start. Also the solenoid is smoking quite a bit at the nuts and the thick metal puece that attaches it to the starter. Sorry I don't know a lot about starters. Does this mean anything to you?

might have burned up the starter using the old batteries to start it.Subpar batteries are hard on starters.

Go to a Agco Dealer get one of the New Style gear reduction starters, best thing since sliced bread.  CLEAN Every Connection SHINY, Add Vaseline mixed with baking soda and smear liberally on all connections.

Ok i went and tried a few more times and she fired up. Also started right back up after turning off. Still got some smoke from solenoid though. Is it a bad solenoid?
Will clean up connections thanks.
And yes positives are positive and negatives are negative haha
Will look into that starter thanks for the recommendation.

Oh and I did charge the old batteries and try to start it quite a few times i was worried I wrecked something doing that.

Jay, two years ago my 180D wouldn't start and like you I cleaned cables and checked batteries. Then I took the starter off and took it to a local starter shop. He tried it on his test machine and nothing. He then told me he could sell me a rebuilt one for "x" . I ask if he would take it a part and see if the brushes could be stuck. When he took it apart it was full of mud dauber nests and had the brushes stuck. He cleaned it out and cleaned the armature and it worked perfect and still is. He didn't want to charge me but it took 10 minutes so I gave him $30 cash and told him I needed no receipt. Best $30 I'd spent in a while.

Oh thanks for the advice. I've had to replace the fuel filter recently and sediment bulb apparatus and found a pebble in the top of sediment bulb apparatus so I know dirt has been in there I wouldn't be surprised if its in the starter too.

If its like the Oliver starters the same starters can be had off ebay for a fraction of one from a dealer.

The smoke you are seeing is from a very high current draw. It sounds like you did indeed have poor connections, and now they are better but not great. And now and before, sounds like your starter could use some attention. I would remove the starter and take it to a shop and at least have it checked out and / or cleaned up inside. IF they tell you it's in really rough shape, I would consider a gear reduction as stated above, they really are nice especially if you start it in the cold. But, if you have a good shop, and they can recondition your starter for far less money, that starter did start your tractor for what, 45 years? Might as well put cables on it too!    Good luck.
