A plate type planter, planting anything is best done at the speed a horse can walk.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

2nd gear high side of the power director wide open series 4 diesel. Don't know how fast that is but it worked for me. 494A JD planter same gear but only 1/2 throttle.

In the olden days!   it was recommended never to plant over 5mph!   that is the end of my knowledge on this subject!

Until you get into these new high speed planters, 5 mph is good. Nephew has 2 JD planters, about 5 years old, plants corn at 5 mph and beans at 6mph.

Planting beans with plates is a "controlled slobber", so speed is much less important than for corn. If you go too fast with corn, you have trouble with singulation, skips, and spacing. Spacing can get screwed up if you plant too slow as well (at least according to the chart in the manual, too slow hasn't been a desire of mine!). We used to have an Allis planter, I don't recall the model number, but I never planted beans with it. I still plant with plate style JD, and I go up a gear at least with beans and it works good.

Agree with everything Tbone said about corn. I have a kinze 8-15 and I try to run 4.5 mph planting corn. It has brush meters for beans and I run about 6 mph.
