 Topic: Mounting a voltage regulator

Hey all, My cutout relay on the wd45 has seen better days, so I got a regulator to be a little kinder to the battery. (yes, I know this means rewiring...no biggie) The thing is, the regulator doesn't want to fit between the genny mounting bracket & the genny terminals!  Would it be too far away to make a mounting plate to fit it on the frame aft of the carb?

The one I have with that type/size regulator is mounted on the front of the battery box..its a 12 volt conversion with a genny, and that's where previous owner put it..

Distance or length of wires isn't a problem, but be sure to get the mounting of the regulator grounded as well as the generator and battery are grounded. Paint under the plate can act as an insulator.

Just get a saddle mounted voltage regulator. It will fit on the generator where the cut out was mounted.

As Myron mentioned, what you have there is a flush mount VR. If you want to mount it on the Gennie, you need a Gennie mount VR. Then the holes in the Gennie will line up with the curved Gennie mounted VR. HTH Wiring is as follows: G or GEN to "A" post, F or FLD (Field) to "F" post. BAT terminal to minus (-) side of the Ammeter. If VR is equipped with an "L" terminal (Load) this doesn't have to be used. OR if you have an accessory that needs 12V's fed to it, you can use the "L" terminal.

BTW, make sure the VR is grounded real good.

Thanks all. I kind of like the idea of getting the regulator back by the battery box & out of the way of the carb. Also handier with the existing wire harness.
Btw, this is a stock 6v system & 6v lights. I figure when this genny dies I'll go to a 12v alternator to improve my lighting options.

Another option, (sorry...lol...) is to make an adapter plate to attach the reg to the genny. I saw one where there were rubber strips between the reg and the plate. Maybe it helped with vibration ? There was an extra ground to connect reg to genny though, that I remember.
If you do this, it'll look more original.....maybe less wiring ?

Cut slots in bracket for mounting and then use screws and fender washers to mount it to the genny.

Make sure the VR has a good ground off the chassis to the frame rail...
