I guess I must be the last guy to hear about this
topic. Moth balls in fuel. So got back on the track last year after about 15 years and noticed a smell after guys ran down the track, my nose says what's that smell. So last night at a pull a guy was talking to me about pulling about the same time a tractor ran down the track,I said there's that smell again I bee n smelling. He says that's moth balls in the fuel. He told me to put 3 of em in about 10 gallons shortly before pulling. What are your thoughts on this guys, anyone ever done this. |

Old timer's trick if they had crappy fuel (read- below 60 octane!)
There's a pretty good write up on it here https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/mothballs-as-an-octane-enhancer/ Aside from the negative side effects (less on older carbureted machines) I think the main "benefit" nowadays would be the distinct nostalgic smell, like running Castrol R instead of a modern low-ash synthetic in 2t engines. As mentioned in the above link though, modern mothballs can be a different make-up which can lead to Hydrochloric acid in your exhaust.

Never heard of this, but that might explain that "odd" smell i notice with certain pullers at every event also! Not sure you can even get the good mothballs anymore! lmao!

How much spark advance should one use, at say... a 3 mothball-to-10-gallon ratio? If I were to run boost, and water injection, could I dilute and spray the mothballs in with the water? If I ran nitrous, could I just blast 'em in through extra ports on the plate? Would this keep moths from flying in my face when doing those after-dark pulls at the fairgrounds? How about shad flies- will they keep the shad flies away? Usually they pass too close to the stack, and wind up being 'lightning bugs'... I'll hafta admit, my tractor-pulling nostalgia stems from memories of going to the county fair with my grandpa, watching the old guys with their worked up Minnie Mo's, Olivers, and such, usually running on aviation gas or alcohol... Up close, they smelled more like bunsen burners, but the pull track was always just downwind of the livestock pens. If there was any mothballs in the fuel, I certainly didn't recognize it...

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

I was discussing this with our staff. I ask them if they remember what Moth Balls smell like. They nodded yes. I then ask them how they got their big noses down between those little legs to smell.... :-) :-) :-)
