Hi everyone,
i am helping a pal try and find a starter for his model D grader that he just got. the tag on the grader says model MD serial 3326. it is a diesel but only 4 cylinder, i thought the D's had 6 cyl diesels. is this motor something someone retrofitted or did some come with 4 cyl. any help is appreciated, if a cyl diesel is standard does anybody kno what it is? I am assuming it is a Buda. thanks

That would make it a 1966 model year. It would have the same 4-cylinder diesel engine that was used in the D17D farm tractor or 175D farm tractor. Some of the vendors on this site should be able to help you.

Don !! Diesels were 6 cyl. Gassers were 4 bangers. Sounds like some one got creative. Tony

Yes, you are correct Tony. I had a brain fart. Comes with old age. I have heard of other diesel engines being swapped into gas D graders so I guess a different model diesel engine in a DD grader would not be that unusual. Maybe that unusual MD in front of the serial number is trying to say something. Maybe it is a 1953 gas D grader that someone swapped in a diesel. If it is a round tube frame then it is an old 1953 D grader but if it is the newer square frame then it it would be a 1966 DD grader. The engine should have some kind of labelling such as Ford, JD, Perkins or a Japanese made engine.

thanks for the replies and thoughts. it is a round frame and looks 50's I would think. the serial number tag has been altered, as in someone cross checked the number and restamped (like maybe a dealership) I am new to this site and will try to figure out how to upload a pic or two to see if you fellas can figure out what this motor is.

here is a pic of the injector and pump side. The pump is a Rossa Master again anyone that can help identify this thing is much appreciated . I did notice now that the tag has the name Shaw Sales, I am thinking the previous owner took this thing to Shaw and had a re-power.... |

Certainly looks like a WD45 Diesel engine, most definite an Allis engine. Would that interchange with a D series grader Gas??
Went back and looked at photo 1, has a WD series grill too. Edited by DMiller - 21 May 2015 at 6:29pm |

I think to put the 45 diesel in a gas grader you had to extend the frame 6 to 8 inches.

He said that it was a 4 cylinder diesel so possibly not an Allis. It is a 4 cylinder engine in the picture. The sheet metal looks as if it might have been taken from an Allis tractor. It doesn't look like the typical D grader sheet metal. I am surprised that there aren't any tags or other information on the engine that would show the make. Those graders had a large adaptor plate on the bell housing so I don't think that it would be that hard to make up an adaptor plate for another engine. The same transaxle was also used in the small Galion graders as well and they may have had a 4 cylinder diesel that they used in their graders and someone found an engine from a Galion to put in their D grader..

I've seen Galion 503's here with both IH 282 6-cyl and one with a British type IH 4-cyl as issued |

The engine looks like a Allis Chalmers D175 4cylinder diesel.

It appears to be a D-175. Same engine as our HD-3 crawler.

Hi. Here are pictures of a D grader that had a diesel engine installed in it. The motor was transplanted from a Japanese diesel truck. It was used on a jughead training horse track near Toronto. Ross.

Hi David. I do not know what these brackets were used for. The owner did not know either. I wonder if this grader had the rearend A.C. bucket/loader on it originally. I do not have a parts breakdown for this loader. I believe that Gilbert Vust may have a grader with this backend loader in his museum.

Hi Mike. The scarifier toolbar on the 'D' grader was mounted directly in front of the operators platform. This California grader appears to have this toolbar on it. Some people will adapt a tool bar behind the grader framework. I believe that Don in BC. has mounted his unit there. You can see this toolbar in the picture of Calvin S. on this 1967 'D Special'. I noticed that the air breather is different on the one from California, than the one from Florida. Ross.

Don't think its the loader bracket, that mounted further forward on the grader, according to the picture in Norm's book...

Yeah Ross that operator is doing a great job. Going back to that 4 cylinder diesel in that grader, from the pictures it appears as if it a 4 cylinder version of the 6 cylinder engine. I know next to nothing about Allis diesel engines so I have no idea what model tractor that might have used it but it must have been a relatively easy swap.
Yes I did mount a ripper on the back of my D grader. It came from a JD 450 crawler loader so it is pretty rugged. The so called soil here often has boulders and decomposed sand stone so the ripper comes in handy. I also fabbed up a blade to fit on the ripper brackets primarily to be used in the winter to work snow in and out of corners. It has never snowed enough since I made it to even bother putting it on.
