Hello everyone! I just rescued a great 1941 C from a fellow that didn't seem to believe in basic maintenance, the biggest issue I have on my plate is the front post where the steering gears mesh, I took the front off and when I took the bolt holding the gear out I noticed that the shims were missing and that the gear actually sat about 1/16" below the bolt, could I remove the gear and put a shim below it to bring it up so it would mesh properly? Is there any place to buy anything like this or would I be able to Fab something? Thanks!

I have shimmed that gear but ever 1/16". You will have to make what ever shim or shims you use. Any that I shimmed under the gear would get tight turning right or left and still have some play at the center. I just worked to a happy medium.

There must be a point where it must have worn I'm thinking, it would be great if a person could find the original specs (blueprints) and find out where it is worn, then build it up from there.... Once you do one then you could rebuild a few more, wouldn't make much money from it, but it would help a few folks out there..... I'll try to shim it first I guess!

What's the serial # on yours? I have a 41 with # 3308. Mine was an EARLY 41.
Hope you get it fixed!! There are a LOT of C's out there and you could just swap out the front end. I could steer you toward a couple of guys.

The serial # on this one is C3960, and I may have a replacement for this one, but I was hoping not to cannibalize from another tractor.... I guess that I'll have to invent another fix, unless someone else can find a better answer, shimming still sounds like the best option at this point

One of the reasons I am broke and have 400 non completed projects at 80 years is because I always want to re make things before buying parts. When it works it gives a person great pleasure. When it doesn't work the third or forth try you learn not to try to fix it that way the fifth or sixth time.
