I have the same dilemma as most of us. At $300/ gal for automotive quality paint, it's hard to justify the cost. I would like to paint my towing rig to match my tractors. Not looking for a show car finish, but not wanting to use something that will fade out and get chalky after a year.
Was standing in Runnings this morning looking at Majik brand tractor paint. Their paints use reducer and hardener. I know adding the hardener helps with the shine. Now for the root of my problem. They only have Corporate Orange. Standing there looking at the color options, I was wondering if I took a gallon of Corporate Orange, added a little brown to get the right tint and a little white to lighten it, do you think I could get a close match to PO#1? Has anybody tried to mix their own. I know guys have mixed their own for Minneapolis Moline's yellow and had good results. Going with tractor paint it would cost me $45-50/gal vs $300/gal. If anyone has tried it, I'd like to know how it turned out, and if they had some mix ratios. |

A good clear coat with UV stabilizer will stop fading for the most part. I mix most of the tractor paint I use with a tint to satisfy my color wanted.(Color Wanted)

PPG 60080 is $300/gal. Any automotive paint with red in it is expensive. Rattle cans aren't full to the top. Have to leave room for the propellant. Plus it is half thinner. So you don't get much actual paint for that $15.

I believe Orscheln Farm and Home has PO#1 if you have one close to you. They also have the hardner etc. to add to it. Haven't checked the price lately, but it was a lot cheaper than the other stuff. They're old paint wasn't worth squat, but that has been changed.

Just a guess, but red would probably be better for trying to get orange to match PO#1 than brown. A friend used a little yellow (very little) with a gallon of white to make a fairly good replica of the cream. Using the hardener in the paint is what turns the enamel into an acrylic enamel which will resist fading better than the straight enamel. If you're going to a clear coat over the top, make sure to use a test piece to verify that the clear coat is compatible. It may blister and peel if it isn't compatible.

Have not had good luck with rattle can paint. Usually gets chalky after a year or two. Plus it would take a lot of cans to paint the whole truck.

I can prolly get you the Valspar paint in the correct color. I painted the Kerosene C with it and some others, turned out nice for a fraction of the cost.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't mix your own from the same brand of paint.
I would suggest a couple of things: 1) mix all you think you will need and then some, in one batch. That's the easiest way to ensure consistent color. Then, as you measure out a quart at a time, add the hardener and reducer at that point. Once you put the hardener in, you're on the clock. 2) If possible, mix the paint with a digital scale by weight and record how much of what colors (in weight) are needed to get the color you want. This makes it much easier to replicate later than going by the comparatively imprecise fluid measurement. Even then, however, you are counting on the manufacturer of the paint to keep the same, exact color. When paint is not sold specifically for mixing, but to spray as it comes "from the can" you can't necessarily count on this. I say go for it, and let us know how it goes. From what i hear, Majic can work well if you do good prep, stick with light coats and make sure to leave at least 24 hours between coats. Try to rush, either with the amount of paint applied or recoat times, and you will find horror stories.

I just did a google 'ppg 60080' and got a LOT of hits.. there's NO reason why any automotive paint supply place can't mix it up for you. Since this IS your towing rig do it right, odds are you'll only have to paint it ONCE in your lifetime.
I'd go with either a single stage or base/clear auto NOT 'tractor' paint. just my 2 cents worth... Jay |

At local Lowes they can scan and mix po#1 Using Valspar Clear base tinting Enamel.
All you need to scan is a dry sample of PPG 600080. Comes out so close you can touch up PPG 60o80 with it. get it mixed in Gals or Qts Attwoods carries Hershall Adams Tractor paints,. it is a gloss enamel . Saw one AC and G painted with off the shelf H A AC PO#! and it looked absolutely PO#1 in my eyes . That is saying a lot. Nothing worse to wreck a decent RESTORATION than to paint the AC the WRONG shade of AC orange. Might as well paint it IH red
Find Valspar clear tinting enamel where ever Valspar paint is sold. Local ACE hardware for instance . lots of other paint outlets around the country. I am still impressed with Hershall Adams PO#1 AC tractor orange. They also have PO#2 Not as pumpkin as PO#1, Too bright for any AC earlier than a D series after 1960 I believe. Trying to avoid clear coat. Just gonna scuff it and shoot it. 1 and done. Ok maybe 2 coats. I used to paint dump trucks with one coat. Looked good with one coat. It's a work truck, not a show truck. Would like to use tractor paint for the durability. It's gonna get scratched! One gallon probably won't do it. Not gonna spend $400 on PPG just to get it scratched. Just like my tractors, it's not a trailer queen. I expect them to earn their keep.

YOur on the right track Trucker... Do what KEN said. Take a sample of PO1 painted part to the store and have it scanned. They can mix to that color... Get something that you can pour the hardener in and it will dry in a couple hours instead of a month. You don't need the clear coat, just get a GOOD enamel that uses the hardener.. I have painted a couple tractors / trailers that way to save some $$$ and it works fine.

I have also done what you said for "mixed" colors. I normally start with a couple ounces of paint ( orange), then add a few drops of ( brown) at a time until I get the right color.. Keep track of the ratio.. When it looks about right, then mix a couple quarts and check color.... then do the whole gallon.... like mentioned, mix EVERYTHING you want to use the first time so the color will be consistant. ................ sometimes a pint / quart of red might be needed to get your shade, depending on the shade of the orange / brown original paint.

If that was my truck I would go with
single stage PPG Omni Acrylic Urethane in the ac orange that matches your tractors. No mistake about it . Any auto motive paint will outlast and outshine any cheap enamel money can buy. Over the red on the truck now PPG single stage orange should go a long ways. Spot Prime any body work close to the sanded original color. Sand it all with 320. Take a chance to save a buck by not prepping to finish paint with a full coat of sealer first. I primed a whole B with plain old orange enamel and finished with PPG Omni after several days of drying to sand the enamel very smooth and give it some tooth. One of the best PO#1 Bs to leave the paint booth ever. My CA puller got the same kind of paint job in 2002. Still looks fresh and very nice 16 years later

Few things in life match paint as to the old adage "you get what you pay for" Nothing can be done to $35 a gallon paint to make it anything close to $400 per gallon paint. If left outside cheap paint is going to fade and chalk. Hardener helps as does doing a smooth job of applying it. Another factor is "good enough" for one person is "no way Hose" for the next guy.
Sooo, if the truck sits out it needs good paint unless looking like a Orange cream sickle in a couple years doesn't bother you. If it sits inside then decent service can be had from cheap paint IF it is applied right and hardened. This C and B were both painted with tractor supply cheapo paint almost 15 years ago. Both are user tractors, neither has ever had a coat of wax but are kept reasonably clean. The C is Kubota orange, the B is A-C paint when they had it in the proper color, picture taken last summer. The WD was painted wit PPG Omni about the same time and other then what we have knocked off of it in use the paint looks the same today as it does in the picture the day it rolled out of the shop. ![]() |

I ordered a gallon of Persian Orange #1 from Yesterdays Tractor when it came it was Tisco paint. It goes on nice and the color isn't bad. Gallon part # is TP282gal ($46.89), Quart TP282qt ($20.58) and Rattle can isTP282sp but you have buy a case of six ($49.60). I went to my local Tisco dealer to order more.

While we are on the subject, when my inventory is gone I won't be selling any more paint. My AUTOMOTIVE GRADE Persian orange 1 (matches 60080) and 2 (matches 60396) acrylic enamel at $95/gal just can't compete with the Van Sickles, Tiscos or the homemade concoctions some are coming up with. Also, the $9 aerosol cans I fill myself will no longer be available once the inventory is gone. Thanks to everyone who has purchased paint from me in the past.

The biggest part of a good paint job is the prep it is hours of prep versus a couple hours to paint I use ppg paint the extra dollars are well worth the finished product that looks good and will outlast me

Haven't bought paint in a few years but last PPG 60080 I bought was OMNI for about $120/gal. Sounds like Deltron or Concept prices, those are way overkill.
