    Posted: 21 Sep 2016 at 2:20pm
Just picked up a used Woods L306 for my CA. I believe it has what's needed for hydraulic lift and hydraulic control of cutting height.

But I'm curious how hard it would be to make the lift and height control done by hand. I like my little CA, but having to engage the PTO to get hydraulic pressure to raise the mower does not sound appealing.

Any ideas on a simple hand lift for my belly mower(?) Something I could build myself (?)

Millions of people have been doing it that way with the three point mounted mowers on the old Ford, Massey ferguson and other brands of tractors for 70+ years.

I've been doing since I was a kid.  It's way easier than trying wrangle a big mower up by hand which if the tractor has hydraulic lift to begin with  is really a step backwards for no good reason.

One thing I would do, if you don't already have one, is get a PTO overrunning clutch for the mower.  Those mowers are just a big high speed flywheel back there and without being able to stop them  from feeding that energy back into the drive train they can keep a tractor moving for some distance when you put the clutch in.

If you have the cultivator depth control bracket it's simple. If you have a drawbar depth control off a B or C it's simple. ALL the woods mowers with hand lift also had a spring to assist in lifting. You can lift it with 2 fingers on the handle if it's set up right.

I took the depth control lever off an old junk New Idea steel wheeled rake and mounted it on my bush hog that I pull behind the 4 wheeler. It isn't the best for leverage but it beats the turn buckle all to heck if you want to be able to quickly adjust the height.

The L306 is powered off the belt pulley shaft so an overrun clutch would not work.

I made my own hand lift for my B.  See the post here: http://www.allischalmers.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=119217&title=fabricated-hand-lift
Charlie is correct about the cultivator lift.  I have one here.  I'm sure others do too.

I have the Woods manual lift on my C if you install the correct helper spring on it My Wife can lift the mower one handed. On my CA I put a fixed length of pipe in place of the hydraulic ram. there is no reason to lift the deck any way. if you want a different mowing height you need to lift the back of the mower to get the correct lead when you change height. the front of the blade needs to cut a 1/2" lower than the back. lifting the front of the deck with the lift and still trying to cut doubles the horse power required. Also putting an overrunning clutch on your PTO will do nothing your deck drives off the belt pulley. You'll need to take the wide belt pulley off and get the correct V belt pulley. ill try to post a picture of the lift when I get home I cant from work.

Well that just sound like an accident waiting to happen. Shocked

My neighbors got a similar one under his Farmall H and although not as bad as full three point PTO driven brush mower his has ran him into a few things his wife was not to happy about. Cry

Better have good brakes to make up for the lack of overrunning clutch!

When you pull back on the hand clutch you can stop the tractor regardless of weather the PTO is spinning or not. If your using a C instead of a CA just slide it into neutral. the sliding gear transmition can be easily put in neutral even under load.

Also the L306 is a three blade finish mower... not a BUSH HOG... makes a difference. You will get some continued drive, but not much.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

My wife mows with a L59 on her C. No problem. (except some times she thinks it is an automatic and forgets the clutch)
Everything is impossible until someone does it! WD45-trip loader 1947 c w/woods belly mower, 1939 B, #3 sickle mower 1944 B, 2 1948 G's. Misc other equipment that my wife calls JUNK!

Not an accident waiting.  Most of the belly mowers for Allis Chalmers came this way from the factor (the mower factory that is--Woods, Arts Way).  The push from the mower is minimal.

I see. Its light multi blade type.  Not the big heavy duty multi blade or single ax blade type.

Never mind.

I have had my old L59 on the CA(no hand clutch) for 10 years and the B for 4 and never had a problem stopping the tractor with the brakes while mowing full throttle. AND, the B has piss poor brakes on it!

Charlie,  You got that right.  My favorite has "piss poor brakes"
CDON_FLA, Don't forget the CA has a hand clutch on the right hand side - if it works - which means you can (1) rev up the mower before moving forward, and (2) stop the tractor with the pto still running for even better control.
Good Luck!
