I am re-assembling my engine and wondering if aneed to use washers on the manifold studs.
I have lock nuts I bought from Agco, but the new manifold (aftermarket made in taiwan apparently!) looks like there are grooves or at least a small polished area for a flat washer. I assume I should ude washers on the stud with the split casting? Also does any one know what the proper muffler bracket is? is it the three piece version - with a band clamp an one piece that connects to a head bolt (came with muffler and was on the tractor when i got it) or is it the single bracket which I also have? I assume I must have to "massage" the end of the new muffler to fit into the new manifold. Should the muffler rest on the muffler bracket bolt? thanks. I am getting close to starting the old girl. I will post pics. |

I used brass nuts, stainless steel washers and copper based anti-sieze when I replaced the gaskets on the manifold on my WD.
It might sound like overkill, but I don't want to have any hassle if I ever have to take it apart again.

I also painted the studs and the holes in the manifold with anti-seize when I replaced the manifold on my WD. The old studs were rusted to the manifod so bad that even if I could have gotten the nuts off, the manifold wouldn't slide over the studs.

I forgot to say what Orange said; some of the studs go into the water jacket.
I recommend coating the threads that go into the head with Permatex #2 before installing them to assurethere is no leakage.

Yes, use washers. They help to spread the clamping force of the nut.
