Beats the heck outa me how either one stays in business,,, Granddaughter and hubby ordered from Lowes 26 wooden fence panels with some concrete mix and posts, to be delivered to their house.  When truck arrived (late) it had 5 fence panels and all the concrete and posts,  driver raises bed and dumps all materials off breaking 2 of the 5 panels.  A call to Lowes and no clue as to when or if the other panels would be available so had those materials picked up and money refunded....So wife and I went to Home Depot today and they had on display a fence panel (like she wants) for special order,  go to service desk and a very nice young lady tried to help, we wanted to know estimated delivery date, never could get one so she asked another clerk, she looks and said we can't order those from this store the Pro Services desk will have to order them but they're only here 8 to 4 m-f.  Why would they have a display and not be able to order and give a delivery date???

Very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have quit buying from them unless it's late on a weekend day. I have price checked some items and for me the local hardware store and local lumber yard are at the same price or lower for better quality. And usually the service is a whole lot better.

Yeah, we have a great family owned Building Supply Co, that I use for everything usually, but they don't have wooden fence panels.  It is much more expensive to buy materials and assemble than to buy ready made.

I get 90% of my materials at Menards. Lowes don't seem to have the selection I want, and Home Depot is a little more $$.  They are all 1 hour away, but kids live 5 minutes from there and we visit every couple weeks.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

They stay in business off of sales volume and people who don't know any better. And dumping fence panels and concrete? Probably because the driver was too lazy to unload it like he should, dumping is for bundles of framing lumber or thick plywood. I just bought some quarter round moulding and oak threshold strips from a local business and it was less than half the cost of getting it from Lowe's or HD and I didn't have to touch it until I got to the job site. Here HD's customer service is a bit better than Lowe's but not much.

Here the customer service at HD got a lot better when the Lowe's opened

But anymore they're both terrible. When you do find somebody to ask you're usually better to ask one of the posts that are holding the roof up

I had an interesting time in a TSC store lately. Was wanting a distributor cap for a Ford 8n and I got a kid who worked there that turned out to be less intelligent than he looked. After probably 45 minutes of trying to get through to him that ford made a front and a side dist. I finally gave up. I noticed all the while he was stealing glances toward that cashier up front and had a hunch it was the reason I wasn't getting through to him. On my way out I moved at a faster pace than normal due to being ticked. Amazedly enough the kid beat me to the front of the store and was standing there talking to her when I went by on my way out of the store. If I had been more sure he was hot for the cashier believe me I'd kept him at the back until closing or after.

After standing and waiting a reasonable amount of time I start bumping into things and knocking them off the shelves. Climbing up and down on them push around ladders you see sitting in aisles works well also. As soon as you are spotted on one of their secret cameras trust me someone will or almost come running.

around here when a new Lowes,HomeDepot,Menards,Bomgaars,TSC, and other conglomerent stores open up, they are manned by set up people. that's people that travel around when a new store opens, and they set it all up inside. when the store opens to the public, most of them people are still there and can answer your questions and tell you where to find stuff. are very helpful. then they leave and God help us all. that is the end if knowledge and helpfulness. then the prices start climbing. I haven't been in a home depot or lowes for years. I have been to menards, but only for one specific item.

The prices in stores are getting way out of line. I'm getting so, and I hate to say it, it's better to let your computer do the walking and pick it up at your doorstep as far as parts and specialty items.

It is often more economical for me to shop online,  if time is not a factor.
The online  price may be less or equal.
Sometimes, freight is free.
Factor the cost to drive to some town or city.
Amount of time spent to go pick up the item.

It is important to research and know part numbers, before placing an order.

I guess I'm lucky to have a family-operated lumber yard/hardware store in town. They can usually get anything Lowes can, and are sometimes cheaper. Also no bull when ordering, and are always good when it comes to returns. They can also be generous on their pricing when buying in bulk. Very friendly bunch of folks there.

LMAO @ Joe! last time I was at our regular TSC...they was out of what we always buy when we go there! and I put an order in for them! they said they'd call when they was in! well they did call, about 2 months later! then they had the gall to tell me I had 5 days to come pick them up and pay for them! as far as I know, they might still have them, we never went back to that store. maybe Joe will drop a hint to his big booby'ed gal pal at his TSC to pass on my dis may!

We have 2 locally owned building supplies near the farm and when you ask for something they know what you are talking about and their service is great. Unfortunately since they have no other competition their prices are a bit high. I drove about 2 hours to get some luxury vinyl plank flooring but it was an enjoyable easy ride and the price, quality, and service were great and at this place cash money talks.
