Does anyone know of someone who has lowered a WD or WD45 by rotating the rear spindles forward and then building a beam front axle to lower the front to match?
I am in the process of doing this with a B and wanted to do it with a larger tractor. On our cherry farm in Michigan we bought several David Brown tractors from the factory with the rear differentials rotated to lower the tractor for orchard use.

Pretty easy to do I think. You'll have to drill a new hole for the bottom brake shoe pin, but other than that it should be easy.

Did it years ago. No need to drill a new hole. Make new pins 1 1/4 shorter, drill and tap pin for slide hammer, install final drive and brakes, rotate final to your position and install bolts. More than one hole, you should reseal top axel . MACK

6 bolt pattern inboard end .............. you rotate 60 degrees ?

If you choose to cut off the lower brake pin instead of drilling a new hole, you cannot use axle studs. Use all bolts.

Nope. The brake mechanism and linkage is inboard.

each final drive gear box can be rotated seperately from the extension tube... unlike the smaller B,C tractors.

No Steve, you flip it at the inner housing. All the brake parts are in transmission housing, only drum is on final. MACK

OK... but now i still have questions... -- WHY at the inner housing... and second, i thought the inner flange had 6 bolts ? so you can FLIP 180 degrees for excessive drop, but you can rotate only 60 or 120 degrees to "lower" somewhat ?
the WF was "different" so it had housings cast 90 degrees rotated.. and narrow ??

The outer bolt pattern is not evenly spaced. Might work at 180 degrees, have not measured the spacing. MACK

Leave those outer bolts alone !! They are too hard to wrench on and they must be TIGHT afterwards or they can work loose. Also unevenly spaced like Mack said.

I think the INNER bolts are quantity 6 ? So you can FLIP the axle housing and lower it about a FOOT... ON the IB you rotate 90 degrees and only drops 6-7 inches.. I guess you could rotate it 60 degrees and the housing would set at an angle... maybe lower the tractor 5 inches and move the axle forward 5-6 inches ??? Would that work ? Anyone ever done that ?

Well I feel stupid. I've had the housings off the trans/rear,done the whole brake thing and all and couldn't figure why the brakes weren't an issue. DUH! Now you got me thinking about a "project"!

Jay Took a peek at my D-15 rear axle housings. Looks like your thought might be feasible. The Final Drive Housings are attached to the Differential Housing by only 4 studs, and they appear to be equally spaced. One thing I noticed is the Diff. Housing does not point straight down, but instead angles rearward perhaps around 30'. Obstacles you would have to overcome: - the Brake Actuator would be pointing forward instead of down - the Fender Mount would be pointing Skyward instead of Horizontal - you would loose the rear support for the Floorboard Access to getting on the Tractor could be difficult with the Rear Tire moved forward. gary... you'd think I'd remember this stuff, having removed BOTH axle housings to do brakes last summer.... sigh... yes 4 bolts 90* apart,so 4 ways to mount.. maybe swap left for right, gets the brake control accesses 'normal' fenders.hmm..ok, 'minor' bodging there... no need for floorboards...it's already LOWERED.......... dang, I'm kinda getting into this.... 'first onthe block with a lowered D-14'... Jay

It don't change brake actuator. Just have to notch axel housing for brake linkage. MACK
