We had a tractor club meeting tonight.  We were inside our air conditioned building.  It was raining outside.  We heard a noise we thought was the a/c kicking on.  That wasn't it.  Finally somebody opened the door & looked outside.  My pickup was on fire!  Emptied 3 fire extinguishers then started pouring water from a hydrant on it.  Fire Department showed up & sprayed foam all over inside the engine compartment & under the dash.  Damn, I'll miss that truck.  Has the full trailer towing package on it.  Heavy duty everything.  83,000 miles.  Tomorrow morning I'll go file a claim with the insurance company.  At least I didn't lose any of the contents.  Interior largely intact.  Have to go to the tow yard in the morning & clean her out.  Truck was parked only a few feet from a large pole building.  No damage to the pole building.  Could have been worse.  Monday I took my almost 92 year old mother to another town about 20 miles away to visit an audiologist.  Could have happened then.  Could have happened at home under the carport.  Could have had my dog in the truck when it caught fire.  Keep telling myself it could have been worse.  Still hurts to lose her!  Fire started on the left side where the battery was.  No sign of the battery at all.  Best guess is the battery exploded.  Oh, well.  Nobody got hurt & nothing else was damaged.

Nowyou have a good reason to get a real truck for pulling trailers rather than a pickup with add ons👍
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Sorry for your loss Dan, but like you say, it could have been worse.  It's the unexpected that hurts the most.

Have to ask, is it a Ford ? from 97 to ?? they were a KNOWN ticking firebomb. Idiot 'engineers' used a switch on the master cylinder to signl the cruise computer.hmm 12 volts, 15 amps of power and combustible brake fluid...that's OK , right?
Friend lost his, totally, including box of timberframe drawings for clients....
Hate to think of them being in attached garages....
there IS a recall..far more complicated than the  fix I did..
glad everyone's OK !

It was a Dodge Ram 2500 HD with the complete HD trailer towing package from the factory.  Insurance company took it away today.  I'm anxious to see how well they treat me.  Interesting that the insurance company sent me a customer satisfaction survey before they settle the claim.  Hmmm.  Best guess is the battery blew up.  No sign of the battery or the shelf it sat on.  That's the area where the fire started.  Had the truck started one more time (and not burned) I'd have driven it home & parked it under the carport that's attached to the garage.  That's scary.
