Well my trusty, but rusty, 2001 Dodge Dakota 4X4 gave up the ghost. The rear end is going out on it and becuse I ordered the heavy duty towing package fixing/replacing it isn't worth it for the condidtion of the truck.

So I have narrowed a new truck down to either a 2019 or 2020 Ford F150 or RAM (Dodge) 1500.

One option on the RAM that I am interested in is the Rambox side box storage. I have stopped at or contacted 4 local RAM dealerships that are within 50 miles of me and not 1 has a RAM with a rambox option. Does anybody have any experience with this option? Other than the cost of a few hundred dollars extra why isn't it a popular option?

Every dealer is willing to get one for me but before they go to the trouble I would like some opinions on it.

I think the idea is great, but when someone hits you in the side, no way in the world are they gonna be able to fix that!

I would think the side of the tuck would get all scratched up. That's why I never had side windows that open on my shell cover.
Everything is impossible until someone does it! WD45-trip loader 1947 c w/woods belly mower, 1939 B, #3 sickle mower 1944 B, 2 1948 G's. Misc other equipment that my wife calls JUNK!

The Ford dealer was bad mouthing the GMCs for this, seems the owners forget they have a hitch ball and when they fold the tailgate down, bam! Dent in their new tailgate.

I am not to worried about scratching it right now, mostly looking at it as an ideal place to store a pair of coveralls, jumper cables, roadside emergency kit, etc...

I agree John. On a quiet winter night up here in the North Land, you car hear your vehicle rusting.

This is about the ONLY reason I am even considering a Ford due to the aluminum body panels.

I saw one RAMBOX unit the other day and it has 'glow-in-the-dark' pull cord in case you get locked inside !!! Really, I ain't making this up !!!
I can see them bening busted into cause, well, you stored $$$ tools in there right ??
Aluminum corrodes and is $$$$$$ to repair, get a ding... new panel, $$$$$

Have to ask what else is wrong with your current ride ? Guy next door parts out trucks every day, guys come 4-5-6 hrs away for the parts..engine,trannies, doors, fenders, boxes, rearends, springs, etc.

I 'did the math' and to just replace my '97 F150 XLT rcab,sbox is over 42,000 Canucks +taxes ( 13%+ $400 A/C tax..) I can rebuild/replace a LOT of that truck before I die and save money(that I don't have...).

If I lived in the rust belt I would for sure consider the Ford........and let the frame rust in two instead.😬

I have the RAM box and LOVE it. It was on the Used truck i bought. Store hitches , box of rags, fuel conditioner etc. I would look for a truck with
it when I am in the market again.

See a lot here on dealers lots, funny they don't have some. Know nothing about them but I thought they were a $1700 option.

I always kept my good truck in the shed over winter salt months, had an older cheaper but usable truck to be the rust bucket. same with the burbs. nothing wrong with the old lady's old burb cept it's rusting out, we keep the new one outta the salt at home and drive the old one in winter. kinda like farm equipment, gotta have 2 of each thing...one for parts! lol

$1500 for a used rear end, and after several days of looking none was found locally. $1800 if they rebuild mine assuming nothing got torn up on too bad on the inside. $2200-$2500 for a remanufactured one.

Plus it now has the NASCAR rear wheel arches and you can look over the rear tire and see into the box along with the lower cab/rockers are also shot. Brake lines would probably need to be replaced in the next few years. 1 valve cover leaks oil. New tires will be needed in the next year or 2. Plus the "club cab" was big enough when the kids were little but with 3 teenagers it is now a tight fit.

Spending $10,000 to $15,000 (probably should do some work on the engine, timing chains?) on a 20 year old truck to make it reliable enough to be my daily driver again doesn't make financial sense to me. I had planned on getting a new pickup next spring anyways when my daughter turns 16 and she takes over the car I have been driving to work.
