I generally prefer to support local businesses, but I am finding this harder and harder to do with ag tires. Let's take the 5.50-16 Carlisle Farm Specialist tires I just bought for the front of my WD. I was quoted $105/ea. at a local shop for the tires installed on clean rims I'd bring in, with tubes additional. They said they'd knock $10/ea. off if I was going to mount them myself (so $95/ea.). The same tires are $75/ea. delivered to my door from Amazon. I decide that for a $20 premium per tire that's about my limit, but okay, I'll support the local shop. They get in, and the guy who gave me the quote wasn't in that day and they're now charging me $100/ea. Fine, whatever, I'll try to catch the original guy later next time I head that way and get my $5 per tire back.

What's your threshold for how much more money you're willing to spend to support a local business on something like this? At $100 vs $75 per tire, that's $25 extra a piece - or 33% higher than Amazon's price. I'm out $50 on the two tires. Next time I'll just order from Amazon and avoid the "quoted one price but charged another" issue, and not lose any sleep over it.

Personally I'd be okay paying $10 extra per tire on these, which works out to 13% over Amazon's $75 price. For me getting beyond a ~15% difference is generally going to push me to buy online. I'm curious what your thoughts are on what it's worth to you to buy local.

I’ll pay a little to shop local and I’ll pay a little for convenience.
I would be asking what the price is for mounting?
If it’s something I can and will do at home I’m much more apt to order and have delivered to my door. Some places have policies about mounting tires purchased elsewhere.
I order and mount all my motorcycle tires.
Last winter I bought local and had mounted 2 backhoe rear tires. Best price I found was local.
I’d be hard pressed to give an extra $25.00 per tire for the sake of shopping local.

Heavy Truck tires I am finding what is available in our area and the pricing accordingly, when I can better the Lowest local shop price by $Frankiln EACH Incl FET and get FREE Delivery to my farm I cannot support local.  I will be buying Ten so am saving a $Grand but thru a different source than amazon or Tire Factory or whatever they are calling the warehouse sellers that used to be popular.  Worst price I got was SAME Tires by Code number and $220 MORE EACH at a local shop, JUST for me to pickup, NOT Mounted.  $2200 is no laughing matter.

Dave, did you try Gary's Tire over in Nashville Illinois? Exit 50 off I-64 right behind Little Nashville truck stop, I have no idea how many tires I have bought from him over the years but they will save you a bunch of money, they do a lot of tire work on farm equipment I bought my last set of front tires for my CA there,, way more reasonable than tire dealers over this way

I just paid $1100. local to have 275 x 55 x 20 tires mounted on the truck... I could save $120. by buying the tires on line and then having the local guy mount and balance, but that seemed like i was screwing him...... i was somewhat worried about the "tire psi sensor"... and he guaranteed me "no problem" on save and reuse.

I did buy new front tires for the backhoe 7.50 x 16... but they were 14 ply.. I could not get on the rims... Took them to him and he mounted for $10. each with my tubes.

I bought new rear tires for the hoe 2 years ago ... 16.9 x 24 ..... bought them on line... Farm Store told me "their purchase price" was $100. each MORE than i paid on line.. and that was THEIR COST... Then they wanted to make a profit so THEY SUGGESTED i buy on line and bring in to have them install.

I'd LOVE to buy Kenda tires for my Kubota (the other orange...) but NONE in Canada(not stocked/sold) and Amazon ( dot com) doesn't like me. They 'see' me as 'in Canada' so I can't even buy them and have delivered to my USA address...
I just go the mother of all electrical staples in one today..in my NEW tire, sigh....

I to like to support local, however with what fuel prices are, consider what you will spend going back and forth a couple of times, you'll save more than you think with having what you need delivered to your door.
Then consider that places don't want to keep anything "on the shelf" any more. So their answer is "we can order it". on top of that places want to charge a shipping fee. I kinda know which places have what and  don't waste fuel riding all over to only here "we can order it". For me if I can't be sure that a place will have what I need by calling first, I will order it myself and have it dropped at my door and not waste time or money running all over. Price of the item is not always the factor.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

It's a tough call and I know it comes down to dollars but when your local store is gone then what? Hopefully someone can keep a business going just mounting tires. Get a bad one on line and what a pita to get a replacement. I know when it comes to tires even the stores have to order some because they can't keep all sizes and types on hand. You can go to you local tire store and get a sponsor shop for a local tractor show or pull but you can't get that from Amazon.

Problem is our local shops order tires as need not stocked anymore. The small shops make minor repairs where tire sales are a low volume of the work sent thru. Of seven shops that used to be within 20 miles Four still exist, owners got old no one wanted to buy so shut the doors place facilities for sale and they sit there yet.

It is not one or two sales that will save them, they do no fleet or small trucking or ag shop sales anymore. Auto dealers sell their own lines, tractor dealers as well here. Truck shops rely on volume sales larger distributors from major metro areas not the local as again cannot get pricing down.

Sad but a fact of life nowadays.

Just north of here in Missouri are two tire warehouse dealers.
They’re getting to the point of just selling. Finding help is hard to do and tire work is physical and dirty.
I bought backhoe tires there and dropped of my tire lt tires and wheels. I waited 3 or 4 days to get them changed because they had no help that could change them.

I change and repair my own tractor flats anymore, it is either that or as noted await DAYS for return as no one really has such services anymore.  We return to where once were, in the 1920s/30s it was seldom a tire was changed/repaired by a 'Service'.

In 2005 I drove a FedEx Home delivery route that included Avoca Iowa. I had 5 WIDE whitewall tires going to a tire shop. Got there and talked for a bit. 5 were needed because it was a pickup with the spare visible. At that time already, it was cheaper for the truck owner to order the tires, have them delivered to the tire shop, where they would be installed!

Thanks for all the input, guys. Thad, that's a good thought... Guess I should go in with some used tires and expect him to mount them for $5 a piece, ha. He had to order these too as he doesn't really keep anything in stock.

I'm sure a lot of it is that Amazon is buying 500 of these at a time direct from Carlisle, and the tire shop guy is getting them from a distributor (w/ markup) that may have gotten them from another distributor (w/ markup), plus the tire shop's markup... But at the end of the day that's too many hands in the pie to be competitive in 2022, for better or worse. I am lucky to be able to mount my own tires as it gives me options.

Dan, I see your point, but this type of stuff is not his bread and butter... I'm sure 98% of his customers don't mount their own tires. He can either make a few bucks off of me or lose it to an internet sale, and either way it doesn't really change his bottom line. I'm not unsympathetic with him as a business owner... It may not be worth his time and effort just to make $5 or $10/tire off of me, but maybe that's better than making $0. I leave that call up to him.

I did give him a shot at some passenger tires for my car but he was unable to get the brand I wanted. His pricing seemed competitive there w/ comparable brands, but I had to go to a chain store since he just couldn't get them from his distributors.

For stuff like tires I use local shops.  That also helps when I have problems, they handle it for me.  I recently had a slow leak in a tire. Took it to a local shop and they fixed it for free.  Those kind of folks get my business.

Kistler Tire in Udall, Kanas is where I buy the majority of my tires.
They have always given us excellent service and reasonable prices.
Lucky for me, they are only a little over 3 miles away.

just bought tire form firestone they don't keep any cheaper tires in stock must order if wanted. i wanted tires today so just put them on. many of my tires have come from sams club pay the $10 service fee and they mount balance and dispose of my old tires and rotate and balance for the life of the tires. the local Ag tire place installes tires I buy from them as part of the cost of the tire. if I bring in a Tractor tire its $100 to mount. and a disposial fee to get rid of the old tire. I just buy from them. For a $200 service call theyll come out and mount at the farm.  they came out a mounted a full set on the case magnum 4 rears and two front. still a $200 service call when one leaked they came out and replaced the tire warranty covered. you dont get that from Internet sales. I have ordered online for my lifted suburban. the tires were cheeper and the tire store won't mount or balance anything over a 36" tire.

Our locals are just as cheap or cheaper as ordering online and it keeps them in business. Their family has ran a repair shop in the same place for 50 years. Their markups on anything have always been very minimal and they have helped so many people. I will buy from them as long as they are there. They areonly 3 miles away.

I turn in old tires at a local shop $5 a car or ATV tire, $10 for HD Truck or large Tractor and they WILL accept all that arrive.

Taks me LESS time to pump down the ballast, dismount tire from wheel ON TRACTOR for Rears or remove demount from rim on fronts and Repair my own than removing, hauling to town, awaiting two to FIVE days for repair then return and remount to tractor.

Are you that incapable of a small repair?

My issue here is that it's $75/tire to have them delivered to my house, and I mount them. Already had the old tires off because I had to weld up some rusted spots on these rims. These were the easiest tires to mount I think I've ever done.

I ended up paying $100 per tire from the local shop - it would've been $105 if I'd had them mounted there. So, the difference wasn't just $10-12 per tire... It would've been $30/tire if I'd had them mount them. I'll keep the $60 (2 tires) any day, and I can address any rough spots on the rim that might cause issues for the new tube, etc.

That's just me though. If it were only a $10 difference, I'd be more likely to let them mount them.

If there are good local shops that provide good service I would use them at any cost . If there are not any good shops left in your area then it is too late and might as well buy online.
Just finished up finally getting a new back tire and rim on my NF D17 ser I. Shout out to JC's for the new rim. Basically the whole 2 week process was expensive, frustrating and time consuming. Tire Basically disingrated while mowing. Weather checked and I should have dealt with earlier. Now need to replace other side to match and it will eventually do the same. Tires and rims hold a lot of the value of the antique tractor these days my friends. If it has rusty rims and weather checked tires it better be a bargain!!!

I just bought a tire for my 27' Sunflower cultivator.  $131.
The guys got right on the tire and had it done quickly.
The best thing was not their price or service but the pretty young lady who returned a 4 way tire tool.
She returned the wrench and three of the guys were watching her walk back to her vehicle. I watched too.
As she was getting into her vehicle, I told the guys, "THAT IS MY DAUGHTER AND I DO NOT APPRECIATE YOUR ACTIONS!!!"
You should have seen their faces and watching them squirm. They were having trouble finding the right words to apologize.
It was then I burst out laughing. Told them I had no daughter and never saw her before. I said I did not blame them for looking, I was too.
Everyone got a good laugh. The other guys in the shop were rolling on the floor because I got these guys cold.  Their reactions were priceless.
Those guys made my day.   LMAO.

I was on a jobsite in the suburbs, we were on top of a hill and the backyard overlooked the road leading up to the subdivision. A group of young ladies were walking up the street in a group of 6 or 7 . Young teenagers. One of them was taller than the rest, tan and beautiful. Idiot that worked with me says "Man that tall one is smoking hot !!! ". Of course the homeowner is standing there. That's my daughter!!! But he wasn't joking, and he wasn't very happy.
