 Topic: Li-Ion vs. Ni-Cd batteries

Can someone offer an explanation to show the difference between Li-Ion and Ni-Cd charging systems. I know that some chargers can diffentiate but what is the difference that one needs a different charging system than the other. The reason I'm asking is that I am switching to all Li-Ion batteries for my 19.2 Volt tools and need a special charger as well to complete the switchover. The reason is longer life and better power retention of these batteries. I am just curious as to why the different charger for the same voltage? regards, Ken MGregor

In a simplistic nutshell... Ni-Cd(1.2V) batteries are charged in constant current mode, so you can build/use a SIMPLE charger, that'll recharge 1 battery or 100 batteries in series.... Li-Io(3.?) batteries require EACH cell to be charged and monitored, so chargers get very,very complicated and expensive. a 18V-20V Li-Io pack will only have 5 cells in it. early Ni-Cads had a memory effect,long gone BTW. Have a look at a Tesla/GM/Ford car battery 'pack' for how complicated the sensors/wiring is ..yeesh as if nothing might go wrong ( aka Bolt batteries...) Oh yeah, you're sitting on top of it...hehehehehe

The charger for my lith batts will also charge nicads... so it says on it. Craftsman 19.2

yes, you can charge lith like nicad BUT a proper charger is far more complicated.. You can recharge ANY battery with a capacitor and a diode, hooked up to 120 VAC, BTDT. By using a charger specifically designed for the battery you use, will allow it to be fully recharged in the shortest possible time. The tech is available to recharge a near totally 'dead' E-car battery in as little as 32 minutes. Really scary tech but it IS possible.....

The Craftsman chargers ( newer units) were "DUAL" and could do both.. I dont know if it uses the LI circuit to charge the old NI batteries, or if there are two charge circuits inside in one... The charger SENSES if you have the NEW type batteries or the OLD NI.

In a nutshell, I was told. You can charge the new batteries in the old charger but don't ever put an old battery in the new charger.

NOPE... New LI will NOT FIT in the old chargers... If you can get the old NI Cd to fit in a new charger.. it MIGHT WORK... but read what is says on the charger... I think it has two charge circuits inside.

All of my Ryobi batteries, both type, will fit both types of chargers and all of the equipment.

well it depends on the AGE of your equipment... A NEW LIth battery can not properly be charged by an OLD Nicad charger.. If it is the NEWERE charger that accepts BOTH, that is different as i said above.
-------------- Yes, the lithium batteries will work just fine in any of the older (blue) 18 volt Ryobi products. You will have to buy a lithium battery charger though. Do not attempt to use the old NiCad charger .
In this way, do old Ryobi batteries fit new tools? They are interchangeable. Any of the One+ batteries (NiCad Black and Yellow, Lithium, or Lithium+) will work in any of the Blue or green tools. Only thing you can't do is charge the newer lithium batteries with the old NiCad chargers.
