I'm still puzzled on the wiring guys. How can you have have an alternator on a lawn mower with out having a regulator. An alternator is putting out an alternating current (ac) the battery is direct current (dc)

In my previous post about the Dixon mower to guys told me to send ac power to the headlights and to me that would be wrong i would certainly think. Wouldn't your lights always be flickering when you go from positive to negative?

mower guys are right....
If you think about it the light in your house run on AC

One version of 'rider-mower wiring' supplies AC to the lights and DC to charge the battery. That one has a'bullet' diode under the heatshrink near the connector.
Think of it as the 'economy' verion. Charging is limited to about 5 amps and NO regulation. Quite common in the '70s......

and yes headlight will go dim-bright-dim based on engine revs...lo-hi-lo...

I have a B&S book and there are 10-12 'versions' of getting electrical power from their engines along with several 'adapter' cables to rewire this for that.

jay is right... AC to the lights and DIODE / DC to the battery... Think of it as a TRICKLE CHARGER... you dont really have to REGULATE... Its not large enough to do any damage to the battery.

 HMMmmmmm,,,and I always thought there was a rectifier in the system to "change" the AC generated by the alternator to DC current to be used by Battery and lights,,,??

Friend had to put a new small engine on their bale wrapper this year and he said something about getting the same engine but with different electrical output. The one they needed had to have a little more output because of starting and stopping the motor more and other electrical controls and stuff.

this drawing is from the Oct post.... a "rectifier" for the AC to change to DC would be a good idea.. and used on motorcycles and larger motors... but for the small singles, you have to think CHEAP.... just put a diode in the line and it cuts the AC spikes ( one way travel) and makes a cheap DC charger to the battery.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Wisconsins had both a rectifier module and a regulator module mounted on the outside of the flywheel tin. --- VERY expensive units now IF you can even find them.

Sunstar has the 2 units in one little module that plugs in to the top of the engine tin to keep them cool. These are on the 18 and my 20 hp Kohlers.

Thank you guys. That does help a bit. I think I want to change the one mower that I'm working on from this diode twin charge system to a system with more power. I believe the blown up motor has those parts.

But the Dixon can I omit the AC half of that charging system and hook up the diode wire only?

YES..... you can just leave the AC wire off..... THat would be the same as leaving the head light switch in the OFF position.

You can leave the AC wire disconnected only if your not running headlights. The charge coil only puts out a trickle charge . If you try running lights from it you'll burn up the DC coil. The larger tractors or the ones with electric clutches or lifts use a differant charging coil that runs thru a bridge rectifier regulator may be two boxes or combined in to one. You'll have to pull the flywheel to change the assembly

Yet another option, add a diode to the 'AC' coil output and connect the cathode of that diode to the other diodes cathode. This will give you an additonal 3-6 amps of charging power.
