 Topic: Killing brush and mulberry trees

Birds keep spreading mulberry seeds and they are the hardest to kill. Only way I have been able to completely kill one is skin the bark all the way around in the spring, it will live all year, produce fruit just to spite me, then die over the winter. If I cut them down they just spread, I've painted the stump with acetone, Roundup, kerosene and gasoline or a combination of all the above, but it doesn't kill the root. I hesitate to use Tordon for fear of it spreading because the mulberries come up in the grape vine, flower beds or next to good trees. I see a local lumber yard sells Fertilome brush and stump killer, have any of you used it?
As for Roundup, I was told I was mixing it too strong and killing the plant and not the root so I diluted it more, then I used it full strength but still they live until I skin them and wait a full year.

you must have ninja mulberries. I brush the stumps with full strength round up and it always kills them deader than a mackerel.

roundup works on almost all tree stumps.. Mulberrys can be a bit harder.. If it has a ROOT about ground, cut that and paint with roundup.. sometimes you can dig a little and get a big root exposed.... A great way is to pull the tree out of the ground, root and all... You need a good tractor 3 point or bobcat to do that... but ROOT OUT is a good way.

I try to pull them out with the 4020 to try to get all the roots if possible!

I pull them when possible. Otherwise, after cutting have used Roundup on stump and no issues

Never tried that. Pulling trees always been a late spring or summer project. Sounds good on theory as some weeds should be sprayed now for that very reason

Tordon will kill them before they go to fruit up. if already fruited up feel free to paint them as will not affect the birds that feed on them.
Good friend of mine had a neighbor that let his dog crap in his yard, left a water bowl out for the dog, with Tordon in it, does NOT affect animals, dog drank, went home, peed on bushes and Buy Buy yardamentation. No more doggy poopin in the yard.
Tordon is the ONLY method to really kill Mulberry, HOWEVER any tree or shrub in contact with the Mulberry root system will also succumb.

I use Crossbow full strength by painting on Willow stumps and they don't regrow. I'm sure it will work on Mulberry.Details

If you use roundup, painted on the stump, now is the time. Use it half strength, 20% AI. Brush , pour or sponge it on, right after the tree is cut down. Cut the stump kinda high, and if you see it budding in the spring, make a fresh cut, and repeat as above. Sometimes it takes repeated apps, so keep at it.

Crossbow for anything with a woody bark. I use it on locust trees that are small. If large I use Tordon on the fresh cut stump. This time of year is getting to the end of the season when applying to a cut stump will work.
