WOW !!! I just looked up 330's on Tractor House, they are asking more for a head than a K combine is worth IMO

k-330, Orange painted frame, cornhead is older gleaner technology, single chain drives all row units. At auction, they usually sell cheap or scrap metal price ($25-100).
A330 black painted frame cornhead is newer-old technology & hold their value. It has shaft driven row units, better coned spiral snap rolls, adjustable decking, spring-adjust gathering chains that extend forward of decking that grab downed stalks before snap-rolls, longer snouts to help lift downed stalks, ear savers on snouts, tilt-up snouts for easier servicing. greaseable bearings, etc... Yes, the current used pricing for good A330 will usually meet or exceed combine/platform pricing. Crazy? Not if you’ve ever experienced stopping ever 25-40’ to unplug downed corn from an orange cornhead & snapped it’s single drive chain during it. Or walk alongside with a pitchfork helping feed corn into cross auger - worse yet, pay someone extra to harvest it with a newer better cornhead(A330,A430,A630,A830). Or simply give up & fence the cows into it. 1977 new A330 sold just under $10,000. |

My old orange EIII 240 head had adjustable stripper plates. It was a good head but it needed new flutes and for some reason I broke a shaft going to gear box underneath twice. Sits in the pasture now.

I’m sure your right about the newer black heads but I’ll just go to an f2 and a 4 row if I have to spend 5 grand. I’ve saw nice black 430’s go for less than black 330’s. I assume that’s because there were less black 330’s built.

Curdogman - yes your F2-A430 combo price/choice is right on target.

Always room for improvement. Black cornheads had improvements. Early had non-spiral flutes. Later had spiral flutes. Additionally, front of snap roll knives could be ground off 3-4” to accommodate stalks to feed further back before being snapped downward.
Also, Ear saver tin & rubber flaps can be unbolted & removed to ultimately open-up feeding contrary down twisted stalks. Orange cornheads era could satisfy if conditions favored. |
