Good healthy looking calves! We had 1/2 Angus holstein cross born one year and it was cold. Calves lost the tips of their ears but remained healthy!

Looking good Darrel. Nice little shelter you have there, is that like a 3 sided shelter they can go into "free choice" so to speak?  Suppose a cow isn't smart enough to go in there to calve.
I should be starting here in a couple weeks.

Nice looking cows and calves. It always amazes me how they can give birth in cold weather and do so well. One would think the calves would freeze to death being dumped out all wet into the cold. Quite a shock to them I'll bet. Thanks for sharing those pictures. Always like pictures.

I do Yellow for females, Blue for males.  There's other ways to tell that, but my way you don't have to get so close!LOL  Looks like Darrel has more options than that on his farm.Wink

Yup, mine dropping calves as well.
Get a kick out of cows that get pushed off feed due to pecking order all year but when they start calving, seems all get along as their calves are running together.
About two weeks of age, start taking turns returning to graze with the rest of the herd and they leave the calves with one or two of the most easy going cows to baby sit.

Get the biggest kick out of watching the goobers chase each other like they are playing tag, run off to mamma to eat when hungry, take a nap, then repeat.
Personalities, and attitude show up quickly as they form their own pecking order.
Fortunate to have met some folks this winter that want everything out of my current Brangus bull, every calf is spoken for via private treaty.

Dad never had a nice place to get the old girls in to calve. The last 1 I pulled out of a snow bank, little bull calf. I set him across my shoulders. Front legs on 1 side of my head, back legs on the other side. Dang little guy peed down my back. But got him home, warmed up, and back to momma that afternoon. He survived. Good looking calves guys.

I would have to say that I am probably the opposite of your neighbor. I'd rather farm. But that doesn't seem to be in the cards for me. Darrel

Couldn't agree more. If it would stay between 20 and 30 degrees for calving season, that would be ideal. Darrel

Yes the calf shelter is three sided. Calves can come and go as they please. They get pretty used to going in there when it gets cold or windy. It's not high enough for a cow to go in there. Darrel

Initially, each of the kids had cows, and so each kid had a different color tag to signify whose was whose. The kids do technically still own their own cows, but they don't collect much $$$. But only one of them is around to do the work, so I guess it's fair. Darrel

Maybe it is the old movies of Jimmy Stewart in the Rare Breed or John Wayne in the Cowboys or Red River, I don't know, but raising cattle has got to be the most romantic occupation on the face of the earth. Low waged, hardest work, and highest reward.

I don't know how I missed your post Darrel. Thank you for the P. M. And may I ask how Dakota Snow is doing?
