	Got a D 17 at a sale and don't know the history. Changed oil and filter. Installed new oil pressure gage. Running at half throttle the gage shows just above the small square on left side of gage. The needle is in the normal box but just barely. Think this will lead to problems ?? Thanks, Larry Miller

	as long as it's in the normal range it should be ok. Did you notice the pressure before the oil change? Did it drop after the change? What grade oil did you put in it?

	does the pressure drop after you get the engine hot? That's when you start having problems.

	Sometimes it is just the oil when it drops after warm up. The real problem is wear but a good grade of oil like Rotella will not break down as bad as a lot of the car type oils. I ran my D14 with a wore out engine for many years and I used many types of oil and the Rotella held pressure better than anything I ever tried. If it is the older bypass type system make sure you have the tube in the filter and make sure you have the filter with the stuffing in it. Wix changed design on their filters for a little while and they didn't work right on the older engines. The new Wix number is 57011 or NAPA 7011 or Carquest 87011.JP Edited by Jack(Ky) - 23 Nov 2009 at 5:41pm

	Could only read pressure after oil change - broken gage when I got it - put in 10 30 & filter - have not done any work with it yet so operating temp has not been in play yet. I will watch it and not worry much unless it goes down out of normal range. Thanks for input. Larry Miller

	You might want to try straight 40 wt or if you live where it gets cold maybe 20 w50.

	I normally use straight 30W oil in my gas tractors. They don't get run in the winter other than sometimes the D19D because of the loader to pile snow if it gets that bad. I use Rotella in my D19D.

	I have found that alot of the new oil guages give a lower reading than the old ones .I went through 3 of them on a john deere m for a customer that showed just a slight reading but ever test I did should everything was working as it should .The dealer said thats normal .An old AC dealer said the same thing

	When it comes to these old engines any oil pressure is good pressure. I have a B that runs 5 lbs and it has been like that for years.

	This discussion reminded me of my dad's old '53 Dodge 3/4 ton that I wish I had kept. It had a habit of running hot but it didn't have a temp guage or maybe the temp guage just didn't work. Anyway, when I got old enough to drive daddy told me "just watch the oil guage, if the pressure drops it's running hot". Everything I've ever read in the manuals for our old AC stuff says anything in the normal range is enough oil pressure. However, haveing it up in the middle of the range might be a good thing if she starts to run hot.
