I guess I am having one of those senior moments. I had to take the mag apart and file the points. It is a rebuilt mag that has laid on the shelf for years. There is no beveled tooth on the drive gear and no plastic timing disc on the driven gear. What is the procedure for timing the mag? Thanks Dean(IA) |

If the "C" is unclear on the fiber gear, sometimes a little dab of machine oil rubbed on the gear will make the "C" visible. You can then mark the two teeth with paint or a marking pen so you know where they are next time. Also, some of the "J" series Mags had a "dog ear" tooth on the mainshaft steel gear, some had a pip mark. (dimple) Also, not a good practice filing points. I know its been done for 100 years but a little spritz of TV tuner cleaner or Brakekleen will remove the oxidation off the points. You don't want to file points because you remove the Cadmium plating that's on them to keep them corrosion free... HTH
