A couple younger guys that were on my crew took a job on a maintenance crew at a TRG plant.
Last night one noticed a gun barrel in a scrap bin. Upon a closer look the bin was full of brand new Gamo air rifles they rack got to take 4 home. There were also new Redriders in the bin. Walmart dumping these I suppose? |

I worked by a strip mall about 30 years ago that had a Sears outlet that was shutting down. Got there about 3 hours too late cause I wanted a table saw I looked at earlier.
Went for less than half price. Got a 50 gallon water heater for $50. Anyway went by again around back and looked in the dumpster and got 2 chainsaws without bars and a weedeater without a guard on it. They all worked and wore them out and threw them away after several years. I think they are just chucking that stuff out rather than dealing with it.

CBC Marketplace is an 'investigative report' on where the Amazon returns go in nearby Toronto....most goes to landfill, some, some clothes go to offshore as 'rags'. well worth watching, disgusting really the WASTE... I suspect most returned goods end up like this...sad.... I did score a roll of wallpaper 35 years ago, took 2 of us to GRUNT to get into truck. WP is 50" wide and a zillion feet long( 3' diameter), STILL have lots. great for drawing out full size..will it work... projects !

There a guy at Wooster, OH. that deals in nothing but Amazon returns. I have been told that people stand in line at one of his outlets to get in, they also have guards that are off duty police officers inside and at the door to keep fights down. He also has a store next door with the more expensive stuff and a warehouse that there is dozens of Amazon semi trailers setting at, also sell on line.

Amazing, here they have to post guards at the local lake launch ramp for the same reason, something way out of whack. It's no wonder we are in the shape we are in.

when Bomgaars took over Country General farm stores, the products that wasn't sold by Bomgaars went into the big truck dumpsters placed at the store. chain saws, gas/electric power washers, welders, tools, clothing, boots, shovels, about everything of different brands went right in the dumpsters. the dumpster company made thousands of $$ on what the farm store threw away! i was at Sams Club one day, had to go around back to load an oil drum. their big dumpsters were full of new stuff too. workers said it was discontinued items, nothing wrong with any of it, the workers couldn't take the stuff, but they gave me permission to grab anything i wanted out of the dumpsters. i hauled pickup loads outta that dumpster for 3 nights after work! was told by several companies that it costs them more to restock shelves with new in the box items than it does to just pallet them up and sell everything on the pallet for pennies on the dollar. PfffffT! not really sure how they pencil that way out?

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

Dumpster diving is one of my favorite pass-times! Many's the time I go to an estate sale or auction, and hit the dumpster, FIRST! If I find a load of stuff there, I don't have to go to the sale, or auction!

My uncle had the contract to operate the landfill for the city of Paso Robles Ca about 10,000 people in the city when he started. About double the number of people when retired. He gave more away than he kept but had quiet the piles of miscellaneous stuff he had hauled home in the 20 years he did it.
Started with a old AC HD 14. Moved up to HD 16, and finally a Fiat Allis 30. Along with the pet HD 21 he would use on other jobs in the afternoon and was back up for the dump. Many stories about chainsaws or what ever that was not seen until the dozer had run over it.

Back in the 80s my dad knew a guy that worked at the Gleaner plant. He had a shed full of parts that came from the dumpster. Dad bought new Gleaner parts pennies on the dollar.
A friend if mine used to work at Lowes. He said they would have 5 gallon buckets of bolts, screws, etc. that were not properly replaced on the rack by customers so the employees were told to pitch them rather than track down the correct placement. They would take turns taking them home. |

Just picked up 20 aluminum pallet skids. Company bought by another company and the name of old company was stamped into the metal. Warehouse manager said he was going to need to “pay” a scrapper to pick them up and get rid of them. I gladly helped him out.
![]() Going to use the pallets for my implements and skid steer attachments as they won’t rust or rot! May go back for more if ge comes up w more. |

Our society is gripped by 'disposability' syndrome. On one hand, they cry about the environment, while the other hand throws things into a trash can, or worse yet, out the window of a moving car. The concept of 'recycling' is nothing more to most than a symbol, and a 'do gooder than thou' facade. Recycling is about both recovering resource value, and reducing pollution, and it occurs in stages: 1) Returning to service- things are discarded that can very often be returned to service as they were originally intended, with very little effort. Repair, restore it to it's prior function. 2) Repurpose- make it into something useful. It may have been a weed trimmer, but the bottom part is toast. It can become an RC boat engine, or a gas-powered die grinder. 3) Use the parts for restoration or repair of other items. The bottom's busted, the top is still good, find one with a busted top and a good bottom, and make it work, now it's in Category 1. 4) Reuse the materials for other functions. A broken bicycle has some wonderful metal tubing, gears and chain, rims with spokes and hubs, that can be used individually or groups to make great stuff. A garage-door opener uses similar chain and a tiny sprocket. A cordless drill whose batteries are junk, can be powered by an old wall-wart supply, driving the garage door sprocket and bicycle chain to open and close a driveway gate... Cut up some old washing machines, refrigerators, and use the sheet steel to make a media-blast cabinet. Use the perforated stainless steel drum of a dryer to make a neat little fire pit. Salvage the gears, belts, motors and sheaves for projects. 5) Separate out the materials, and use them as raw. Melt aluminum extrusions into ingots with a homemade furnace, sand-cast replacement parts or other neat stuff. Heat up recyclable plastics, and form them into useful stuff. 6)Deliver what you can't use, to recycling. Take home hardware and electricals to the ReStore. |

Spot on Dave. Some time back my boss and his son threw out a Rigid 14” planer. It wasn’t very old but they couldn’t get it to adjust. I took it out of the dumpster and had it working within minutes. |

No more scrap metal than I generate it is not worth hauling to recycle, my upbringing won’t let me send to landfill. Local vo-tech is 3 blocks from me and they have a roll off for scrap metal that supports the school. The last timeI contributed it was nearly full.

I sold a house last Thursday to a cash buyer. He called me the day before the closing to ask if he could get a key that morning. I dropped off one on the kitchen counter at eleven assuming he wanted to measure etc. for getting materials. Went by about 4 pm and there's a dumpster in the driveway. He and two young guys had removed all the carpet which was a year old and stripping out everything else he didn't think looked like new. Went by today and the are ripping off the vinyl siding and installed a new front door. Remodeling his dream home? No, he's going to rent it. I guess some people grew up different from me.
