I own both Ford & Dodge vehicles.....the oil filters for the Ford (Motorcraft FL1A) & Wix 51515 will fit the Dodges but they are longer

So is it better to use the bigger one on the Dodges.....thus resulting in more filtering capacity

and then I only have to keep 1 filter number?

So long as the filter is stated to work with the vehicle it can be used.  As to more or less filtering, length is not the only criteria.

If the vehicle manufacturer recommends a filter, then that is the preferred filter.  Others can be substituted, but it is the owners call.

Fit is one thing, work properly is another.  Make sure that it works, by checking on an oil filter interchange.  A bigger filter would be slightly better, but unless its listed on a trusted interchange, may do damage... JMHO!Wink

I would image a slight difference in filter length would not make much difference in performance. But the filter length, may not be the only difference, one filter may have different interior design, it may be tighter, or looser filter media. Oil pressure by-pass valves may be affected when using a filter not designated for that engine.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Baldwin clearly says same filter, longer version so wouldn't they be the same?

YES they are... car manufacturers can use 2-3 different filters on the same motor in different vehicles.. Normally it is due to access to the area, or  trying to get more room between the filter and the other components.... It just makes sense that if one filter is 2.5 inches long and one is 3.25 inche long that you would get more filter material in the longer one.

You can always compare the SPECS... but if Baldwin says its interchangable, go for it !
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
