Having an issue on a I600 forklift with the steering going out when a heavy, but well within the limits load, is lifted.  On lighter loads, the steering works fine but on heavier loads, the steering wheel can be turned but it does not move the wheels at all.  Has anyone seen this issue before and what could cause this to happen.

I would suspect that the piston seals in the steering cylinder may be allowing oil to bypass from one end of the cylinder to the other inside the cylinder. When lightly loaded the volume of oil may overcome the leak and allow steering, but when loaded and higher pressures are required the leaking seals may be allowing the oil to bypass them.

Years ago, we had this issue on an old IH forklift.  It turned out to be something along the lines of what Butch said, I know it's apples to oranges, but on the IH, the solution turned out to be a diagonal hole was drilled in the valve block, in later models, to give priority to the steering, over the load.  Not likely much help on the AC, unless it used a similar one piece valve block casting...

Thanks for the information. That is what I was thinking but it didn't make sense to me why that would cause the steering issue. Your description makes sense and I understand why that could cause the issue. Problem is trying to find a new pump assembly (part number 240101) or a rebuild kit for it. Does anyone know where I could find either of them?

From what was mentioned just rebuilding cylinder might solve problem - most parts used may be found at any hyd shop or even ag dealer , as it may be just O rings or such .
Other option would be MINNPAR , Herc U Lift in MN also might be able to help as they were AC fork truck dealer and had a knowledgeable service dept .

I would think it would be something else as an I600 fork lift is a reversed I600 and the heavier the load being picked up the lighter the rear should become (the steering axle) so it should steer esier with weight being picked up, but as to the problem I cant help you other than this
