I see there is a big difference in the price of hydraulic oil that replaces AC 821 power fluid. From $387 to $976 for a 55 gal drum(on line price). Is it worth the price difference to by the expensive fluid? Any suggestions in this area? Thank you

Are the oil specifications the same? If so, then go with the cheap. If not, do some more investigation on it. And follow the oil specs of the owners manual's recommended oil.
In the early 90's, I worked on a design team to expand some lube oil blending plants for Chevron. We had their recipes as they needed to be put into the computer programs, and most oils in the same family (ie 10w-40) are very similar except for a few "unique" additives. Their oils were made and branded for 100's of different sellers. Edited by Stan R - 01 Jan 2021 at 7:02am |

Just plain 303 is junk and won't work properly in extreme cold or hot conditions, I get the Pureflo in a 5 gallon yellow bucket it's good for new stuff clutch packs and brakes, so it should be good in One Hundred series AC,s, , in this case - cheap really isn't good

Thanks everyone for your input. I am going to change hydraulic oil in several tractors this winter, thats why so much is needed. I want to make the right choice on brands of oil.

The oil/fluid you are looking at should clearly state, either on the container or a technical data sheet, it meets the Powerfluid 821 XL spec (or at least Powerfluid 821 which was the previous spec). If they don't show the manufacturer specs the oil/fluid meets, I would avoid it.

Cenex Qwiklift is the best, actually has GL-4 gear oil protection qualities.

I only use John Deere Hy-Guard hydraulic oil in my equipment.
It may be a little expensive but the peace of mind knowing I have a quality oil is worth the extra cost. Spending a little more now is much more economical than spending a fortune on repairs. |

Allis, FORD, GM, CAT, and JD all do NOT make oil... There are several manufacturers in the USA and they make ALL the oil for EVERYONE... They try to STANDARDIZE on some blend and addatives to meet several specs.... That is why you should look at the SPEC on LABEL... It will say something like " MEETS Allis 821, CAT TO2, CASE Hy-Trans...... etc "
A good quality oil ( not necessarily expensive ) will meet 10- 20 different Vendor Specs.

One way is to look at the spec numbers , Military Spec # matching is a good way to find if it will meet the requirements .
Was using a so called SAE rated oil from a large farm store - ended up having rust form on dip stick of engine - it seems the ability to disperse oil and not hold it suspended was not in blend . changed brands and problem went away . Friend worked at local oil blending plant - all stock came in in rail tankers as #10 weight base stock - then processed into final product . I got 50 gallons of IH High Tran from him but said IF I wanted the true IH blend I had to wait a few weeks till they batched it but could get another labeled product that was slightly different blend but was said to meet the specs but different Military grade number . Said I would wait . |

I use Cen-Pe-Co hyd oil in my 8050, 8070, and 7060. I use the cheaper oil in my older tractors. I used to use the cheaper oil in all of them. My 8050 is used on my sprayer with a hyp pump.
It seems to run smoother and quieter with the Cen-pe-co hyd oil, just my thoughts. Older tractors dont really need the newer oil with all the extra additvies. Randy

I would like to mention that Chevron (Delo brand) sponsors the FFA tractor restoration competition. So maybe that will help you with deciding where to spend your money. If price and quality is similar, why not go with the brand that helps get the kids rebuilding tractors?

All good info - one thing i would pay special attention too is how the condition the old oil is in- as in milky looking, water in it, if so flushing with diesel fuel may be needed

We get ours from Wallace Lubricants. Dont know if you have any where you are. Dont remember the exact drum price but less than any shared so far. Meets 821 spec. Their house brand is Pinnacle, but weve had more than one drum of their Pinnacle oil show up with the Mobil pegasus on the bung cover.
