Is there a central clearing house / website, etc. that a person can go to find used car and truck parts? I'm thinking salvage yards or even guys parting out wrecked cars?

Seems like having to call around to salvage yards would be an inefficient way of doing it.

For years a scrap yard in Hays advertised on the radio they had a national car part locator.  I don't know what they meant as I never went there for a part that they didn't have but I am assuming they could look through inventory of other yards that were in on the locator.

So far....no joy.

Part in question is for a late model Toyota Rav 4, the positive battery cable and related wires. Dealer referred to it as a wiring harness assembly.  Part new was quoted as over $1,100 from dealer.

I imagine there would be similar autos.....totaled after rear end collision.....that would have entire front clip still intact.

While a ridiculously expensive part, it is not something you think of as a big ticket item. Ideally, you could search the Internet for it by part number. Otherwise, no clue how to find individual parts like this one other than start calling. At some point, after spending too much time on the phone, would be cheaper to buy the new one.

take the harness off the truck... lay it on the floor and start building a new one to match.

Harness got repaired. Shop doing the work had replaced another a week or so back......mice had chewed through it. Good news is they saved remains and were able to make one good one out of two. Happy ending.

Good to know there are the other options. I'm telling folks that no matter what they may think of that  hunk of junk out behind the barn, somebody wants it or something off it. Don't trash anything.

Hard part is to pair up the guy with it to guy wanting it.

Usually, most wrecking yards have a tel-a-type system, which if they themselves don't have the part you're looking for, they'll send it out on the tel-a-type and they may be able to find the part needed in a day or so from all the other yards in state and out of state.

https://www.car-part.com/
For many parts you can find them on a site like this that has adds and a a list of who has what

I used the site looking for a transfer case for my 2000 GMC but ended up rebuilding the unit in the truck myself . $60 for clutch pack parts and couple bearings and was back on the road . The link I put up was a actual link from site - can't understand about the - (hyphen) but whatever works .
