So dumb I thought I would share it. Went to change oil in my 170 and had trouble getting the drain plug loose. Thought I would crack it loose with my impact, almost all the oil ended up on the floor. Don't think I'll try that again.

Lesson to be learned: Buy some proper fitting copper compression washers and don't tighten the plug so tightly.

On so many offroad forums that I used to frequent, my "given" name was, "Torque Anal." I guess I AM just that; my thinking? IF THERE'S A PUBLISHED TORQUE VALUE, THERE'S A REASON FOR IT, SO USE IT!!!
Sort of tight, tight enough, tight as you can get it - are not proper values. And WILL cause trouble. I never start, or end, a project without my torque wrench(es) there the whole time.
Case in point: Lug nuts on autos with disc brakes. Too tight, rotors can warp, leading to premature replacement. Torqued properly, maximum brake life. WHO KNEW? lol! Anyways, I've crossed the "DO NOT HIJACK THE THREAD" line, sorry!

It's nice they put such a large drain plug on there, gets the oil out fast.😆
My DA put a 5 quart pan under the one-seventy the first time I changed the oil.........won't do that again.😆

Sounds like something I did.
New to me truck and I needed to change the oil.
Got 2 gal oil and a filter.
Put a 2 gal drain pan under the truck and watched 15qt drain out.
That's 7qt on the floor.
Then it was back to town for more oil so I could move the truck.

However you loosen the drain plug you need a container under the drain plug big enough to hold all the crank case content before you loosen and remove the plug. Don't drop the drain plug into that container.

How to change oil.
1- Put too small of pan under drain plug.
2- use vise grips to remove plug
3- drop plug in to drain pan as oil runs down your arm
4- watch oil overflow drain pan on to floor
5- go have a beer before you clean up the mess

I saw a 'professional' heavy equipment mechanic( he always bragged..) ,toss 10 gallons of oil into a bulldozer THEN figured out WHERE the RIVER of oil was coming from...... ..drain plug was next to phone...hmmmmm

I forgot a step.
It is very important that you don't check to see if the gasket from the old filter is still on the block.
Two gasket are always better than one.

There's a step that sometimes subs in for step 3....... drop plugs and watch it roll away just out of reach as you stick your finger in the drain hole to stop flow and you think to yourself.... now what.
Happens only when you do not intend to drain the oil but just check for water.

Lonn. I didn't realise you were watching me change oil!? That list looks just like what I do on the first tractor at my fall oil change extravaganza. She's a pretty toney event after I get done painting the floor with used motor oil.

As for spillin oil, I always liked the ad AAMCO transmission had where the mechanic pulls the plug and takes an oil bath. Can't find it on youtube, maybe it was another company's ad... |
