Hey guys! I have a ? for all the gurus. I have a 12x20 lofted storage shed on skids that I need to move about 25 feet to pour a small foundation for it to sit on and then pull it back into place. I know approximately how much it weighs and was curious as to how much a D14 will pull? On know that depends on a lot of variables. My D14 has new 14.9-26 tires, rear segment weights and no fluid in the tires. Ground is dry undisturbed dirt. I have much larger tractors I could pull this with, but they are tied up several miles away with haying equipment. Just curious if my D14 might be able to get the job done...or if I should just wait for a bigger tractor??

A properly weighted D14 will pull a 3X16 plow thru heavy soil
|

You can figure all day and not know for sure,so just do it. If not you need to go get a bigger tractor.

Put some round pipes under it, and you can prolly park the D-14, set the brakes, and winch it that far, with a come-a-long...

I think it'll pull it. I drug one for a buddy once across his yard. Used a little 25 HP new Holland no problem.

It will move the building, go in first gear, low range. Put as much weight on the rear tires as possible. On dry hard dirt you should pull it, but you might need to scrounge duals to be sure. I would guess it would pull 6000 to 8000lbs on skids over flat hard ground (with a lot of weight)

The Nebraska Tractor Test report will show how much it will pull with the drawbar, with lots of weights on the tires. I don't know if the track was paved or not the time of the D14 test.

Hook up to it now and try to move it 3 or 4 feet. That will give you an idea. Use a substantial log chain as snapping log chains have killed tractor operators.

It'll pull it no problem BUT
1) use cut down hydro poles to roll it along, if not available, strips of well oiled plywood or 2by8s under the sill plates will do. The quest is to cut down friction. heck even watering the grass/gravel will help. Think like Moses did moving big stones....
2) put heavy carpets on chain between D-14 and shed. This will prevent busted chain from damaging anyone.
3) Do NOT allow anyone to be near the chain ! Only 'safe' place is in front of D-14 or behind shed.
I've used 'Troy' to pull my 7000# forklift a few times, the key is being able to 'roll' the load NOT drag it!
