So I 'm sitting there on the 17 and thinking I still need to replace the tank(big dent) and maybe some other things and it occured to me  that most of the tractor  has been replaced.  I've replaced the motor, three wheels and tires, the fenders, hood, grill, radiator, wide front(old one was bent and poorly welded),side panels, seat... You get the picture, but I was wondering how much have any of you replaced on a project before you part it out.

Have my Grandpa's WD in town.  It had a loader on it, so it took quite abit of abuse!  I think the only sheet metal that WONT need replace is the gas tank!  He installed a non original muffler that required he have the hood hole cut larger, so that needs replaced as well!  Rear wheels are rotting from CaCl also!  Some day I want to restore her, because it was his, but does not make sense economically!

A hard worked Tractor is always gonna need a lot of new parts no matter what kind of Tractor and the mfr. Its a given. Tires, seat, wheels, are normal replacement items, and depending on the care the Tractor got right from jump street, a motor isn't outta' the question. Obviously, a Tractor that hasn't been taken care of is gonna have its problems once it moves through a few different owners and the years progress on it. In most cases, things on board that were fixed by cutting corners usually are still not fixed correctly as it passes through the different owners, till it hits an owner that wants to do a resto, or get those problems straightened out and make it a great working Tractor again. Its just like car owners. Some vehicles have over 200K on them and the owner has taken care of it and it still shines and runs great. Then you have the vehicle that has 70k miles on it and its ready for the boneyard.... Its a gamble. Take my early hand brake C that I have. The only thing I think that will be original on this thing will be the drivetrain, and that needs to be gone through. Wheels, tires, sheetmetal all needs to be replaced. Why? Cause' its so rusty that its falling off the Tractor. Why do I intend to keep it and restore it? Cause' I'm a knuckehead, and I like a challenge. Actually, because there wasn't a lot of em' made basically. But, I'm still a knucklehead keeping the darn thing and restoring it.  Confused My man Tony C. has been helping me out with some nice used sheetmetal for it tho, so I'm collectin' parts for it as I go along. Can't beat that Western dry desert country sheetmetal!  Thumbs Up

Just finished rehabbing an old CA; different pumpkin (main shaft bearing and hyd pump lobes shot), different hyd pump, different axle clutch, new clutch/PP/TO brg. Rebuilt engine, the only parts from it reused were 4 connecting rods, 4 push rods, 4 lifter rockers, rocker shaft, 8 tappets, and the oil pump (block, head, crank, and cam all shot). Thank goodness for donors or this one would be on the way to China.

We have a WC that we call a 1938 because the rear end that we used is from that year & has the ser.# stamped on it. Frame rails & most sheet metal were from a 1941 WC, the stamped steel rear wheels from a 1939 WC, front wheels from a 1940 RC. The engine is a WD45 type replacement block that was installed in the 1941 WC back in the 50s. That replacement block has now been upgraded with a crankshaft, cylinder head, distributor, and manifold from a 1953 WD45. A Gleaner E donated a carburator to the cause. And the chrome "eye candy" is vintage JC Whitney...If Johnny Cash was still around perhaps he could write a song about this 1938,39,40,41....WC!! Kip

Lets see, as far as I know, the tin on my 17D is original except for the air stack tube, The crank, rods, and head are at least the same as when I brought it, rims are too. Tires, TB and oil gauges and the seat aren't...

I bought a non runnig D-17 diesel tractor that had been lowered for grove work in California when new. It is ready to paint as a grove tractor and the only part from the originial tractor is the torque tube with the serial number. I always seemed to have a better part in inventory.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Many years ago, we put this load of orange on the trailer.

This was one of them. Grandpa restored this one below, Glenn's B is definetly less than this one. I always liked this picture though, kind of a 'resting place'

Back in 1967 my brother was spraying thistles in the pasture when he fell asleep and drove the WD45 over the creek bank. It ended upside down in the creek. He was OK but the tractor got a new hood, grill shell and radiator, the steering shaft, steering wheel, steering support arm and the throttle quadrant replaced at that time, and probably other stuff too.

When I was a kid, the fuel tank started to leak and Dad and I replaced it with a used one. It was the first father son project where I got to do most of the work and Dad just supervised. Thats a great memory. I ran into the back of another tractor and the "new" grill shell was replaced with one from a WC or WD. Dad was not happy and that repair I did myself. LOL
I repainted it in the 80's and at that time I replaced the fuel tank mount because one of the light mounts was broke off, I found two used headlights and put a used left fender on to replace the rusted out one. It had one front rim rust through and the toolbox replaced too. The generator has been replaced with an alternator along with the entire electrical system.

Last summer it was rolled over again, thankfully no one was hurt this time either. The radiator and grill shell are tweaked and the hood needs replaced, the steering wheel is bent, as is the left fender and it's mounting bracket. I have a WD "donor" tractor so I guess it's time to repaint it again! LOL!

It's also been overhauled twice and the tires have all been replaced once or twice. Not surprising for a tractor that spent the first year of it's life doing custom baling with a roto baler, and the next 57 years here on our farm. It was the primary tractor for a number of years replacing a John Deere A, plowing, discing, pulling a springtooth harrow or a spiketooth harrow, planting, rotary hoeing, cultivating and running a mounted Ford picker. When when it was "replaced" by newer, bigger tractors it still mowed, raked and hauled hay, sprayed corn, spread manure and fertilizer, ran the elevator for ear corn, pulled the rope that lifted the forked bales off the hayrack up to the barn loft to mention just a few chores. It also had a WD9 loader and was our loader tractor up until the late 70's.

Finally it was a lawn mower for most of the last ten years or so. Now a zero turn mower has put her out to pasture. Ironically she gets to plow and disc again, but just for fun, and she goes to tractor shows and the occasional parade.

On my WD (used to be Dad's), the hood, grill, fenders, toolbox, both rear rims and a couple of connecting rods that got bent went we pulled it 25 years ago after it got stuck from sitting outside about 10 years.
