I have a guy near me with a 918 allis chalmers backhoe and it got me to thinking if I remember correctly they were not built very long. Does anyone happen to know how many where built?

Looks like A-C did a big serial number jump according to Swinford's book.
My guess is less than 400.

I looked at 3 machines in this area of MN - 2 with ROPES post , one open operators station , no cab machines - then they were BIG machines with almost 2 yard bucket and 18' hoe standard and 10.00 x 20 front tires . A machine made for big jobs not the average hoe use .

That's probably why they didn't make /sell very many of them. Too big for most guys and not big enough for big jobs that a wheel loader would be handier for or a track hoe that would dig deeper. I Looked at a Case 780 years ago, just too big a horse for me.
