Hello, new to the forum. I am planning on restoring a 1959 D17 that has been on the farm for 15 years or so this winter, and I have some questions on how to achieve the correct look. Not gonna be a show tractor, but I'd like to use the correct paint, decals, etc......
As I said, it is a 1959 gas model. Specifically I'm wondering what the proper paint is (persian #1 or #2), and what colors are the wheels supposed to be? Also the grille.......orange, creme, white, black, what would be proper?
I've seen several variations of decals that confuse me as to which is correct for this model. The ones that are left on the tractor now, do not have the white background and have "D17" with a circle around it on the sheet metal near the foot clutch.
This may be a dumb question, but did the gas tractors, this one in particular, ever have a tachometer? There is not one on it now, nor does it have a blank cover. Wondering if the cover is what is missing, or the tach.........
Would this tractor have had a white steering wheel? Or is that just a dress up item left to the discretion of the owner?
Lastly, could someone tell me which "series" this tractor would be?
Thanks in advance for any help. This seems to be a great site and looking forward to learning alot about AC equipment here!

Also, a picture or a link to a picture of a properly restored 1959 model would be great.............

It's supposed to be P.O. 1, grille should be what's known as a "black bar" grille all painted black. Orange centers on the wheels with silver rims.
A couple books you might find interesting are: "Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985" by Norm Swinford and the other is "Original Allis-Chalmers". For the most part, Norm's book is considered to be the most authoritative on A-C farm equipment.
The tach and traction booster gauges were options that could be deleted. Occasionally you see them with "plugs" in the holes where they would have been.

Thanks for the pic.........
Unfortunately, I must have a grille from a later model as it doesn't have the black bars. I guess it will have to do, because it took me quite some time to find it.
Can anybody speak to the correct decals? As I said, the ones on that tractor in the pic don't match mine. Other than the grille and decals, it looks just like my tractor.
Is the air cleaner stack supposed to be orange?

The black bar grill tractors came out in late 1959 as a new for the 60's model.
If yours is an early '59, it will not have black bars on the grill but will have the diamond screen that was originially all orange the same as the tractor. In that case the D-17 decal with the oval surround below the gas tank will be correct. P.O. #1 is the correct paint.
The serial number is needed to be sure what is originial.
I just checked the good book by Norm Swinford
Serial 16500-23363 are early '59's without the black bar grill
Serial 24001-28199 are late '59's with the black bar grills
Serial 28200-31625 were '60 models with black bar grills Edited by Calvin Schmidt - 14 Aug 2011 at 9:18pm |

If yours is a 59 then your tractor should look just like the one in the picture, white background, d17 emblem on lower rear panel of hood. check your serial number if it is a 59 then this is what it should look like, as far as the grill look around some more maybe you will run across one, thats somthing that can changed out pretty easy.

Actually with that low serial # yours would not have had the black bars its a early 59 and the decals you have would be correct for your serial #.

Getting ready to reassemble this D17..............
Can somebody tell me the correct tail lights that this tractor should have? Two round combos with the switch? Two of the smaller bullet style red ones? One of each?
Also trying to find the little grommets that go through the fenders for the light wires........any suggestions.
And to correct my original post, my tractor is a 1957 model...........

For fender grommets go to an auto parts store. Look on the "help" rotating rack. Most likely there will be blister pack with a dozen or so grommets in three sizes. The small size will fit tail light housings, midsize will fit the top and bottom fender holes. If not, ask for 1/2 inch at the counter.

Too many numbers for a D17. Is that last number actually a G for gas? |

Sorry, when I made the orignal post I wasn't using the correct S/N, which is why I originally thought the tractor was a 1959 model.
The actual S/N of this tractor is 10336..................

The decal that says "WARNING--Before dismounting shift into neutral, etc........" , Would it be correct for this model tractor to place that on the "dash" area where the throttle and traction booster levers are? I see on my D19 that there is one like this decal in that spot...........

Go buy yourself new wheel bolts and nuts too that are zinc coated. The nuts that hold the eccentrics on the wheel center should also be new but they are the heavy duty style so probably special order from someone like Fastenal.
