Many years ago we lived in Illinois. As I young fellow I remember seeing the imprint of these cleats on the snowy side walk. Guess they were for traction? Any thoughts? Thanks

Your title is Horseshoe cleats.
Caulks are added to horse, and ox, shoes to help them keep from slipping and for traction on slippery and soft going. Depending on the task at hand the sizes of them vary. Very common to have good sized relatively sharp ones when working in the woods. Very damaging if one gets stepped on by a horse or ox with caulked shoes.
Search horseshoe caulks for more info. I see you answered jay that you were talking about small ones on your heel, do you wear horseshoes? There are a number of different types of ice cleats and creepers available for people to use for improved traction on slippery surfaces. Many just slip on and off over shoes/boots. Depending on the type, they can have the opposite effect on hard surfaces like concrete. Or are you asking about the small flat metal "clips" that some people install on their boot heels to slow wear?

Postal carriers still use them on boot heels during snowy weather days here.

Ones I remember were back in high school where they were on engineer boots so the click / click of metal onto hard surface was a COOL Sound or some maturity thing , that and the Duck Tail Haircut and turned up collar in back .

One type or brand of them were called Heelsavers. Seems to me it was stamped into the metal.

At first I thought you were talking about the Amish who braze carbide chips onto the front bottom of horseshoes, Then they drive der buggy along the edge line of the lane and the horses dig trenches in the center of the lane in the asphalt about as deep as they are high. Meanwhile cops pull over Der Englishmen and cite them for running studs in their tires a day after the snow day expired.

You mean the old heel clicks?
Remember them, My parents threatened to put them on my shoes as I always wore off a corner of the right heel. Told me to pick up my dammn feet and quit shuffling new heels are expensive.
At first i thought you were going to discuss the old tractor chains that had old horse shoes in the center to replace wornout section in a crossbar. I've repaired several sets of those. It's Hard to find large heavy shoes especially with 2 or 4 caulks in them to make them from today. The little riding horse shoes of today wouldn't take the stress. |

I recall them, people were slipping and sliding when trying to create the "horsey" sound.
